Can Lisinopril cause a cough that is productive with mucus draining from the sinus'? My cough started a week after starting Lisinopril. It is a cough that produces sinus drainage. I've taken medications such as Claritin and Allegra D which do not help. My doctor says that Lisinopril produces a dry hacking cough not a "wet" cough so it must not be the Lisinopril. After reading all of these posts here, I don't know if I the Lisinopril is causing my constant hacking and spitting of mucus. Any one else have the same symtoms?
Karenlee - The doctor took my husband off of Lisinopril after 1 year due to the fact he was having nagging coughs all during the year with a little mucus. The doctor said it takes 10 days to clear up.
The only way you will know for sure is to go off Lisinopril for 10 days. If your cough clears up then it was the drug. Also, you may want to get another opinion, it sounds like your doctor isn't interested in finding out what is causing your cough.
Babybel3 - I went on lisinopril less than a month ago, and got the cough (with small amt. of clear mucus) almost immediately. Unfortunately, the drug is working, so my doctor wants me on it for at least 2 months, so my BP, hopefully, will regulate. But the cough is driving me crazy and keeping me up at night, so I'm hoping to be put on another ACE inhibitor without the cough problem after the 2 months is up. (According to my internet research, the cough is caused by an increased level of a protein called bradykinen, and is only annyoing, not dangerous. But there sure are varying definitions of "annoying" !)
Diaz2007 - I have been on Lisinopril for more than 1 year and side effect started 2 months ago. Cronic, dry, hacking cough. Lots of mucus and sometimes all the mucus with the hacking cough cause me to vomit small amounts of mucus that is in my throat. My doctor has changed my B/P medicine with something new one. I have been off Lisinopril for 8 days now. The mucus has minimized but the hacking cough remains the same.
Pcbob - I was also told about the 'dry' hacking cough, as a possible side effect. I hate to say it, but how do they define 'dry'? I get lots of mucous after a month. I'm waiting for some blood test results to come back and I'll run this by my Doctor. I find that the ankle swelling has gone down (Procardia) but this cough is no fun, either. I saw someone mention neck pains. I get that, too, and REALLY drowsey. Anyone know of a better ACE inhibitor, that doesn't have these side effects? I am also trying to get my ED under control.
Pcbob - I get the 'dry' cough, too. With mucous discharge. It was supposed to help with my ankle swelling and ED. I think the ankles are a bit better, but the ED has definitely gotten worse, after 3 weeks. I don't need the cough and the ED was already bad enough. I had blood work last week, to check on my cholesterol, etc. I think I need another drug. Does anyone know of an ACE inhibitor that doesn't have these side effects? As for the doctor who doesn't take your concerns seriously, keep looking. My doctor is great. I search the internet for answers. The papers they give you with the drugs don't tell you very much, certainly not about the bad side effects.
Denijack - I have had chronic sinus mucous (clear) and stuffy draining ears. Thought it was allergies. Have been doing saline sinus rinses. Can't seem to go a couple of days without the mucous building up again. Plus other symptoms that I feel are med. related.
Delboy5651 - Hi, I have very similar effects, I cough a lot (had a chest xray showed no infection). I have quite a bit of sinus drainage , and my sputum(sp.?) is clear but thick. I was told by my doc this was a side effect of lisinopryl and live with it!!
Harry824 - I have gotten a very annoying dry hacking cough from lisinopril, starting a few days after using only 2.5mg at bedtime. While the cough can occur during the day, it invariable plagues me at night while in bed. It begins some minutes after lying down and seems to last a few minutes. There may be something to the sinus involvement. The cough reoccurs once or twice during the night and drives both me and my wife nuts. About 10 days ago after using lisinopril for about 3 weeks, I was forced to stop the medication. The cough persists altho it may be slightly less frequent and intense.
Jazgray - Several months after I started taking Lisinopril I started having chronic sinus mucus and constant postnasal drip. My cardiologist said that my symptoms where not due to Lisonopril, but I notice that the mucus buildup is overnight and I take my Lisonopril in the evening, so I think it is due to the Lisonopril. I have been doing a sinus rinse regularly which helps, but I am wondering if there is a substitute blood pressure medication that does not have this side effect?
Jazgray - I just did some research on substitute medications on Wikipedia and Angiotensin II receptor antagonist are often used to replace ACE inhibitors when people have a dry cough as a side effect. My side effect is nasal congestion so I don't know if this would help with that side effect, but I am going to talk to my cardioligist and see if I can switch over to an Angiotensin II receptor antagonist drug. Cmscindy - Hello I'm new here. I am a 58 year old female with high blood pressure and a rapid heart beat, and looking for some answers. I started to take Lisinopri in July and have been coughing since. My sinus drains also and the mucus is so thick sometimes I choke on it. It keeps my husband and I up. I sometimes have a skipped heart beat I will cough and my blood pressure and pulse will go up is this all normal? My Dr. makes me feel like it is all in my head. I also take Clonidine and Atenolol some times my blood pressure goes up for no reason.
Imagyne810 - I too have the chronic cough and sinus drainage after taking Lisinopril for a week. I was taking Atelonol but BP was up slightly so Dr decided to put me on Lisinopril. I wish I could say the cough happens intermittently during the night as some have said but it is all night long with short rest periods in between. To say the least, I am exhausted. I also have the sinus drainage that seems as if I am expelling from the sinus cavity and not from the chest or lungs. That is also white or clear but thick and I also feel sometimes as if I will choke on it. I understand this cough could take anywhere from 10 days to over a month to subside......I hope I can last.
Imagyne810 - PS The Dr. took me off the Lisinopril and put me on Benecar..she said I was showing an allergic reaction to the Ace Inhibitors.....just a bit of info to share with your physicians
Cmscindy - My Dr. was out of town I had been coughing none stop for 5 nights.I too had a dry cough and it felt as I was going to pass out from all the coughing. I tried sitting up to sleep didn't work. I finally went to see the Dr. that was standing in for my own. He took me off Lisinopril. He told me this was the culprit. He said it will take some time to get out of my system. Still have cough but not as bad.
Dadavisg - Hello all and thank you for sharing your story about linsinopril. I am a 52 year old female and have been taking the drug for high bp since march of '08. After taking the drug in march, I began a dry cough but as the months went by, I began to produce mucus when I cough and it has gotten worse. I am due to go to the allergy clinic this week to get tested, but I have stop taking linsinopril because I have been coughing since march of '08. I left a message for my doctor to change my bp medicine and waiting to hear from her. My throat constantly itches or tickles with thick mucus and makes me cough constantly. I have been off the medicine for 7 days so far. I want the drug out of my system.

Gsb9122 - I too started having a dry cough, after I staring taking Lisinopril. I thought it was all attributed to my sinuses. The drainage continues, but I finally had to go to emergency hospital because the cough became more frequent. Also, I experience a tickle in my throat and that seems to start the coughing; I was given a chest x-ray and that came out clear. The doctors there figured out this hacking cough was due to Lisinopril. So they told me to discontinue using Lisinopril, prescribed an HCT for my HBP and told me to follow up with my primary care physician. The cough seems to have subsided just a little; its been several days now, So I'll carefully monitor.
Lh6896 - Yes ... I have had the same thing now for 4 months. I have finially come to realize that my coughing started about a week after I started taking lisinopril for my high blood pressure. I called my doctor today to get a different kind of medication for the blood pressure. I will tell her to give me an HCT as your doctor has. I can say that it has been 4 miserable months!!!! Especially at night, I would wake choking from the sinus drainage. .... sinus meds didn't help.
Annoyed48 - I have the same thing...small amount of clear thick mucus; worse at night, sleep sitting up, yet no help. I have tried antihistamines and cough syrup but they didn't really help any. . I have been on Lisinopril for a year and I am starting my fifth week of coughing. I thought it was because I had a cold recently but after reading all the comments I think maybe it is the lisinopril causing it. Definitely going to discuss it with the doctor and try changing meds. This is very annoying and really interrupts your rest!
Hb1951 - I started with a vicious dry barking cough within a week of starting Lisinopril, but didn't know this was the cause until I stumbled over it on the internet. By that time I had been on it for a month. I stopped taking the Lisinopril as the cough was constant, severe, and interferring with everything - I'd rather deal with the slight increased bp!! I have now been off the medication for 10 weeks, and still have the cough, with sinus drainage and tearing eyes. My doctor keeps giving me antibiotics - no help. Cough med after cough med has been tried, no help. Chest x-ray is clear. Anyone found a treatment for this?
Ynyslass - Thank goodness it's not just me! I started with Lisinopril about 3 months ago, and although I get coughs regularly in the Winter, the one I developed a couple of weeks after starting the drug, is still with me.
I saw my doctor twice about it and each time he said it was an upper-respiratory tract infection which could last for 6 weeks - after 12 weeks I began to get suspicious, did some research, and found that Lisinopril could be the culprit.
Although my cough isn't as bad as it was when I first started taking it, it's levelled out and is now just plain annoying. Partnered with the sinus drainage when I lie down to sleep, I'm going to see my GP about coming off the tablet now as I'd love a complete night's sleep.
Btw, if you're really having problems I can recommend 1 Sudafed tablet at night which dries everything up and deals with the mucus trickling down your throat and causing a coughing fit. If the cough is just a dry tickle though it doesn't help. Unfortunately I get both.
Wisjan8913 - Many people have the same problem of nagging cough following taking Lisinoprol. Take a Acid Reflux medication prescribed from a doctor and your problem will go away. A little trick I learned is that taking an herb called CL-7 by Nature's Herb once to twice a day will keep this under control. It is cheap and works great. Take it for a day or two before you start seeing the results but promise me it will work.
Phylld - I have been on lisnopril for about four months
now and have had a cough about as long.
I took what I thought was a bad cold and even
thought I had pneumonia. Went to doctor in
February for checkup and told her how I felt
since my lungs were clear nothing was done.
One week later I was so bad I went to walk-in
clinic. Lungs were still clear. They gave me cough
syrup with codine, amoxicillan, and a prescription
inhaler. Still have the cough but inhaler does
help for a while. Called doctor and she told me
to stop lisinopril, watch blood pressure and come
see her in two weeks. Still coughing day and
night but worse when lying down. I am a 66 yr

Tuckerinn - I am a 57 yr. old female that has been on this lisinopril for a couple months now. I was on Benicar HCT, but my co-pay was $60 per month, where I can get lisinopril $10 for 3 months supply. I noticed this dry hacking cough one month after starting the med. I constantly have to have cough drops in my pocket--which seem to help. It is irritating and seems to really cause a lot of sticky mucous in my nose, as well. I take my meds in the a.m. and it takes a few hours for the cough to start. Anybody know of something inexpensive to try without this aggravating side effect?
Tim427 - I am a 50 year old male. Had been on Benacar for a while, but asked my doctor to put me on something I could get as a generic because Benacar was quite expensive. He put me on lisinopril about a year ago, and all seemed fine. Here, a year later I began this chronic, but not so dry cough that nearly makes me black out. I have to be very careful when driving. I thought it was a common cold, but it started about the first of the year and has not let up at all (3 1/2 months later). I am sure it's the lisinopril, and am seeing my doctor in a couple of days.
Scottaye - Oh thank god i found this. I have been coughing a dry hacking cough for at least 4 months. I imagined it was everything but my bp medication. It's 7am on Sunday and I've been up for the last 3 hours because I can't sleep. I feel like I haven't slept in 4 months. I am stopping the lisinopril immediately and will contact my doctor. I can't imagine what it will be like to be able to have a normal life without this cough. It has effected everything. I have to sit near the exit in a theatre because I will invariably have to leave the movie to go hack up a lung. It sounds like I am spreading some awful disease when I get going. My wife has put up with it with few complaints but I know she is frustrated too. I have had the coughing attacks where I almost pass out. Hallelujah for the internet.
Proudmomofthree - I am a 36 year old female who is fairly healthy aside from HBP which developed 12 years ago during pregnancy & a cold/sinus infection once or twice a year. I began taking Lisinopril 20mg/HCT 25 mg in May '09. Thinking back the clearing of the throat & slight cough began shortly thereafter but I thought was sinuses being as I live in East TN. I developed a sinus infection back in February '10 was treated but no real relief since then I have been sick for 4 months. They laid me off from my job due to illness which has been a blessing in disguise because I don't know how I could have worked some days. Symptoms: extreme fatigue, dry mouth, sinus infections, debilitating cough to the point of vomiting & feeling like I could pass out, wheezing, felt like my airways were closing up, haven't had a normal nights sleep in months.... I went from being an active mother of 3 to thinking that I might have something terminal wrong with me. Never did I think it was this medicine. Since April I have taken 6 rounds of antibiotics-Avalox, Biaxin,etc, along with Z pac, dose pac, shots of Rocephin, steroid shots, intravenous steroids at the ER. As of last week I had a clear chest x-ray & a very slight high WBC count of 10.9 yet the cough is excruciating. They diagnosed me with allergies/asthma though I have never had any problems, but still no change. PCP decided to send me to a pulmonologist and an allergist which I am still going to go to. I began doing my own research & found sites like this one where I felt like I was reading my own story. I stopped taking this "poison" 4 days ago & will lower my BP with diet & exercise. I just can't live this way anymore.
Coughingpat247 - I also have been plagued with the constant coughing and sinus drainage, especially at night. My doctor just took me off of Lisinopril and has put me on a generic brand of COZAAR (which is very expensive) but now has a new generic brand called LOSARTAN, which is very inexpensive. I take 25mg. I have just started it so don;t know how I will do on it, but it sure is worth a try. I am tired of coughing all night. Maybe some of you will want to discuss this with your doctors. Good luck.
Samson44 - I, too have had the horrendous coughing and sinus drainage with the lisinopril---also started taking it because the Benicar was too expensive on my insurance plan. Today I start the Losartan HCT--generic for Hyzaar---my doctor said if I just take the Losartan (generic for the Cozaar) I would also have to take a water pill, so I opted for the HCT. Just hoping the cough will soon go away--it is driving me and my co-workers crazy.
Staple - I am a 68 year old female, have been on lisinpril for a year, developed a cough in February after a cold, been to three different doctors with no results(coughing as I write) no relief. Changed my BP medecine three days ago, How long does it take to go away?
Lmd - I too have been on this Lisinpril for a couple of years and the cough only seems to get worse. You seem to get use to it but I find it only getting worse rather than the body adjusting to it. Also, I never made the assoc. with the sinus issue which I also have been getting
Snowflake45 - The same thing happens to me when I take Lisinopril. I stopped taking the medication and the cough got better. When I started taking it again the cough starts back. It was very embarrassing, coughing all the time. I have taken all kinds of stuff thinking it was allergies. I have been off of it for several months and my cough went away. Night was worse.

Newgroove63 - I started taking lisinopril about a month ago and a month later, I started the coughing and notice that a friend of mine was complaining about the same thing we not only had the cough, but a rash appeared on our breast, and I was experiencing, feet and hand numbness, I called my Dr's office and couldn't get any reply until a decided to go sit in the office, after I coughed all over the Dr's Pts for a while, I bet some one came from the back, and was calling me to the back, how dare they place me on a drug so horrible and try to ignore me, off lisinopril, and waitin for my life to get back to normal......the worse.
Everett53 - I am having the same problem. I started taking lisinopril about 3weeks ago and started coughing about two weeks later. My cough also is accompanied with sinus drainage which seems to be getting worse. I have sinusitis but have had it under control with treatment at the allergist and this is the first in 3yrs that i have had such drainage and the zyrtec does not help.
Librarylady - I have been on Lisinopril for 15 months now. It has been the worst and most expensive year of my life. I have had nonstop chronic coughing and thick sinus drainage. I can hardly go to work part time, can not sleep due to cough and can not function. I cough so hard I vomit, wet my paints and see black. That's no fun at work or driving. I am getting very depressed and can't go on like this any longer.
I have spent so much money with no insurance going to doctors. They all say Lisinopril will be a dry cough not sinus mucus drainage. I have been on all the antibiotics, steroids, allergy meds, Sinulair, Musinx, Robutussin DM, prescription acid reflex meds. always have a cough drop in my mouth and had CT of the sinuses. I am seeing an ENT specialist now he put me on another allergy med and wants a allergy test done. I am running out of money and patients. I quit the b/p med for a month to see if it would help, but it did not. Since a dr. said it could take three months to get the ace inhibiter out of your system. at this point I am going to stop it on my own and try to eat right and exercise and see what happens.
Is the company that makes this drug aware of what it is doing to our lives? Dr.'s also need to be listening to us and stop using this drugs.
Doriscolemanjones - dcj - I started taking lisinopril 10 mg almost 2 months ago. Starting noticing a tickle in my throat which caused a dry hacking cough until tears ran down my face. Can't go anywhere without cold water and a cough drop. The cough wakes me up several times at night. I have fibromyalgia and sleep deprivation worsens this condition. This cough is definitely interrupting my restorative sleep. Went to my GP who asked me if had been on the internet. I said, "no, why"? He said because Lisinopril can cause a hacking cough. Well if he knew this why the heck did he prescribe it to me? Hadnt he been on the internet? He stopped the lisinopril and gave me Losartan Potassium which I have been taking for two weeks. It has lowered my bp but the coughing persists. Was going to take Allegra to see if that helped but from what I have read from my internet counterparts, that will probably be a waste of time. Losartan can also cause a cough but Im hoping that it won't. Will try to get off all meds for a couple of weeks to see if the lisinopril cough goes ago and then will go back to Losartan. Will watch my diet while I'm off the meds.
Sir Trey - Hi....So glad to have found this site....I have been on Lisinopril for almost a year and have actually brought up blood-tinged mucus from the cough, not because it's coming from my lungs, but because it feels like my throat is getting torn up from the coughing...also have a chronically stuffy nose, no bad at times, I feel almost desperate to clear it....otc nasal spray helps a little with that....but this is crazy....I'm going to have my doctor switch this....Works well for the BP, but this just not worth it.
Milehi07 - I say Lawsuit. this has been a huge problem for me and my work and my home life. I just returned from the Dr for the 3rd time this month. First I was diagnosed with Bronchitis, then the 2nd time they said I got a sinus infection on top of the bronchitis. Still today both symptoms are still present so I went for a 3rd time. Been on antibiotics for over 4 weeks no improvement. I cough till I spit up or almost black out as another person has mentioned. I have been given the strongest cough syrup available. Finally this time after a CT scan, Chest Xray I was told I don't have bronchitis or a cold. this Dr said I am having an allergic reaction to Linsopril and changed me over to Losartan. I can't believe this thread and many others I have read where I can relate to everyones symptoms. Question is for those that now have liver failure due to Linsopril did you have these symptoms. We should ban together and sue. We all have lots work time, spent lots of money on Dr's and tests. Not to mention lack of sleep which affects your marriage and relationships.

The lack of sleep due to sinus drainage is driving me crazy. My husband can't stand to be in the same room with me for all the snorting I do. I have never had this much sinus drainagej in my life that interfered with my sleep. I feel like I am choking to death! My problem is more sinus drainage than coughing. The snorting even drives me crazy! I went to a doctor who said I had a sinus infection, put me on Amoxcillin and gave me two shots. I went to my IM doctor who told me I needed a decongestant, to go buy Sufafed 30 mg. The Sufafed did not help me at all. I am calling my doctor as soon as his office opens. No one can live without sleep, and I'm not a day sleeper, but I will have to sleep today. Thank God I'm retired and don't have to try and go to work. When is the drug administration going to pull this drug off the market. Who do we complain to besides each other? I will never complain again about my internet bill, because finding this is going to get my life back. Good luck to all of you.

Ripstone - All Ace Inhibitors cause a cough and sinus problems in some people. Darn near killed me. I would love to sue the mfgr. of this drug.
Ripstone - I was put on Lisinopril 7 years ago. I did start out with a cough that eventually subsided. I then started with sinus/ear problems. I have spent in excess of $40,000.00 in 7 separate surgeries with an ENT for maxillary sinus, deviated septum, ethmoid sinus, separate tonsillectomy, separate adenoidectomy, mastoidectomy with tympanoplasty and the last being 2/28/12 another tympanoplasty because the first attempt blew. Met with a PA today that was well aware of the ramifications of Lisinopril affecting the nasopharyngeal system. Yes, I posted above that I would like to be involved in a lawsuit against the manufacturer and I sure would be interested. This drug should be taken off the market. It has ruined my life for 7 years. The PA asked me today before he mentioned anything about Lisinopril, "how long have you been on Lisinopril?" I told him 7 years and come to think of it that is when all of this started. BINGO! Just came off of it today will post later re: how coming off has worked. He indicated to me that all ACE inhibitors can cause these problems. If you are coming off Lisinopril do not accept another Ace inhibitor. Personally, being that I have lost 51 pounds due to the ruination of my life from this drug I no longer need a blood pressure drug. Do yourselves a favor. Diet and exercise is a small price to pay in order to retrieve your life.
Firenicz - I can't believe that today I find out that this probably has caused my ringing ears to get worse AND the chronic cough that has caused me to be sick from September until now!!! Tons of antifibiotics, used ALL of my 10 sicks days and now I am being docked AND it is really hard to teach when you cough and eventually have lost my voice!!!
Hawaiianstyle - Hawaiian style - aloha from hawaii! i recently started taking Lisinopril and within the the first two weeks, i developed a dry hacking cough. a few days later my nose started drainning. at first i thought i was sick so i started taking over the counter meds to treat these symptoms. i started to wonder if the Lisinopril was causing this since my doctor did tell me that a dry hacking cough may occur. i started looking up info here online and came across this site. i was blown away! im not alone. i immediately stopped the Lisinopril and called my doctor to take me off the Lisinopril and give me something else. EACH ONE OF US KNOWS OUR BODYS! DONT BE FOOLED! TAKE A STAND! GOD BLESS!
Firenicz - After being on this drug since September and being sick as a dog, sick as I have ever been in my life, 5 rounds of antibiotics, I found this site!!!!! THANK GOD!!!I am off the drug and am starting to get better. I teach and the nurse at the school had the same reaction to this drug, and our symptoms were much the same. I know now that it was this drug. AND my doctor did not warn me and I was switched to this because my insurance would no longer pay for diovan.
Ruby17 - Don't want to repeat all said above, but I am so thankful to read this all these posts -so I'm not alone, not crazy and there is hope! After three months of coughing so severely that I've been throwing up, choking and eyes watering (has happened several times while I've been presenting on podium for work!), I finally have confirmation of what it is. Over a week ago, went to the doctor who diagnosed me with bronchitis that was turning into pneumonia (gave me meds but don't feel much better). While there he remembered that he'd put me on the drug several months ago! Took me off it, trying another one but symptoms still here. Choking is the worst (but then so is throwing up in my mouth!). I think we should ALL email the pharma company - a class action lawsuit would take forever. I don't want anyone else to go through this. We are united in our pain - I wish you all the best!
Chadd - Lisinopril and other blood pressure medications are dangerous and totally unnecessary. Several studies have proven that vitamin C will lower high blood pressure safely and naturally. Just do a google search for 'vitamin C reduces high blood pressure' and read the articles. Vitamin C was effective even though the studies used a relatively small dose of only 500 mg per day, much less than the 2 or 3 grams per day recommended by Dr. Linus Pauling for preventing cardiovascular disease. Of course, Big Pharma and organized medicine aren't interested in vitamin C at all because it is cheap, unpatentable, and a huge financial threat to their high-profit pharmaceutical drugs. Unfortunately, Big Pharma practically 'owns' the FDA, so I doubt this drug will ever be banned no matter how much damage it inflicts on trusting and unsuspecting patients. Vitamin C is an essential nutrient vitally important for cardiovascular health. I would urge you to read two very informative articles at the website cqs.com. Cherylrothwell - My poor Mum who has just died, complained of coughing up a white phlegm all the time. She was also feeling sick. She was taking Lisinopril for high blood pressure. She had loads of appointments with pain clinics, and gps and because everyone thought the cough was what was making her ill no one bothered to get her in for an endoscopy to see what was really making her sick. She had developed a cyst on her pancreas. I am so angry to think that this awful drug masked her real illness which may have been treated. What are the medical fraternity thinking of allowing this awful drug on the market. I blame myself for not really listening and investigating this further before now. The only reason I have found this website is because my husband has developed a cough and I have just checked his medication and it is Lisinopril.
