I have been on Loestrin 24 for 2 years!! And I am finally getting off... and so happy to find this site! I have had to be put on Topamax because my migraines became so bad, which helped my weight gain (that I attributed to my own depression that I thought was my own fault!) I didn't even realize bc could cause depression but it all makes sense! I came on here to find out if Loestrin has been the cause of my SEVERE HAIR LOSS over the past year and a half! When I started taking it, I was also going through a stressful situation and thought that was the cause, but have now realized that my life is back to normal that something else must be causing it. I tried to get my Dr. to take me off of Loestrin about a year ago due to the EXTREME nausea, dizziness, headaches and fatigue that it was causing and he decided that I should just be put on Topamax because I was just a Migraine sufferer! What a nightmare. I can't wait to switch tomorrow!!
1mom100 - I have been on Loestrin for less than six months and out of nowhere I have been having the most horrible migraines ! Called the doctor and they are taking me off the medication. I am in the early stages of menopause and if the side effects from the medicine that I am given is this bad, I fear I may just have to suffer through.
Sweetgriz - Sorry to hear about all your side effects but YES, THE HAIR LOSS IS TERRIBLE. My daughter took this bc for abour 4 months and probably lost half a head of hair, Besides the depression and headaches. Her once beautfiul thick hair is not fine and thin. When she asked her doctor he told her this wasn't a side effect, but then we called the pharmacy and they told us that lots of people call and ask about exactly that. Its been a year since she is off it and her hair has never been the same. I would like to know if anyone else had this problem and if thier hair came back
Lymiebrain1 - Interesting, I have been on this pill for about a year and am now on topamax. I have mild to severe headaches everyday. I have been trying to figure out which of my meds have been causing this, and now am curious about the loestrin 24. I thought it was my klonopin or something. Anyways, as well as the headaches I have been trying to figure out the new cellulite that has accumulated on my person. I feel like I might need to weed this pill out of my regimen. Thanks
Rjuice - wow I have been having the same symptoms, I actually had to go to the er because of a severe headache, I didn't think anything of it because I had always had headaches. Also I have also has major HAIR LOSS. I can't wait to switch, but I don't know what to switch to, because I haven't talked to my doc. yet.
Hjones - Have you now noticed hair regrowth since it has been over 6 months???

Jessicamom - Wow! I am 33 and have been on bc for 15 years. I stopped to have both of my children and am now having horrible headaches now that I am back on them. I feel like I am going crazy. I think I have a great OB but I can't get her to help me other than she keeps switching my bc pill. I too am back on loestrin fe and am surprised she chose this pill after what I am reading with all my headsches. I am at a loss for what to do for bc. I have been married for over 10 years and don't want more children right now and also do not want to use condoms if its not necessary. I would like to know if anyone has found a combination of oral bc and migraine meds that work well together?
Lizzavala311 - I am amazed to here all the reviews about loestrin. I have noticed severe hair loss for the past 9 months or so. I was in some what in denial about it until this last month when I realized that I could now see my scalp. I have been going to the dr/derm and I tested positive for an ANA test which tests for autoimmune diseases, but further detailed tests came out negative for any such disease. I was happy to hear that but still annoyed that I could not figure out what was contributing to my hair loss. I found this page and stopped myself. I was on loestrin 24 for about a year or so, probably about the time this all started happening. I had them change me about a month ago, but I still think the prev bc has taken its toll. Im freakin out. Has anyone hair grown back after stopping this med? Im in desperate need to figure this out.
Rel - I know it's been a year since you posted this but I am experiencing the exact same symptoms as you did and wondered what you have done to help with the hair loss you've experienced? I totally believe it is caused by Loestrin. I've been off of it for three months now and still don't see any change in my hair loss. I'm really hoping you've found help and can share it.

I5239 - I have also experienced hair loss. I have been on loestrin 24 since Feb 2009 and now it is August 31st 2009 and I am changing my BC pill to Yaz tomorrow. My doctor just called it in! I have extreme hair loss and I also see my scalp especially on the top front of my head and sides. It is very scary! I have very thick long hair and to see it come out in long strands is crazy! I am not sick. I wish I changed months ago! I hope my hair comes back!!!!
Chrisy163 - I am 24 years old and have never been on birth control till three months ago, my doctor said i should get on it because i have PCOS and its suppose to help stop the systoms of PCOS, well sad to say it did not, my systoms got worse, i always had super thick hair and you could never see my scalp and now im loosing my hair right up front and on the sides and i have acne as if i was 14 years old again, its really depressing. I started taking fish oil vitamins and vitamin D hopefully my hair will grow back.
Nfllm - I am 25 years old and started taking Loestrin 24 in August. It is now January and I have been losing a lot of hair around my front hairline. My temple areas are almost completely bald. Has anyone else experienced this in this short amout of time? I tried to go off it and developed severe acne and I have never had a problem with acne in my life so I started taking it again. Has anyone experienced severe acne after going off it? Haa anyone had their hair come back after they stopped taking it? I'm just really worried about it being permanent.
Adowd11 - My daughter has been taken Loestrin 24 for about a year now and I noticed the hair loss also. I am reading the above posts and now I'm really worried. Non of them give the answer if the hair started growing back after a while. Is anyone out there that can tell me that the hair started getting thicker again?
Arasange1 - I have been on Loestrin 24 FE since July of 2006. That's almost 4 years. I noticed my receding hairline within months and have been horrified by my hair loss ever since. I watched it become thinner and thinner. I was tested for throid, iron, vitamin levels. Everything's been normal and I was beginning to think that I was just going bald because I couldn't find a reason. I am sick that I am just learning, 4 years later, that I have ruined my hair. I just made the decision with my OBGYN yesterday to go off the Pill entirely. I haven't even had periods in the last 4 years. That was very convienent, but at the expense of my hair. I wish I would have know, I wish all the doctors I went to could have told me. We can only move forward from here. I have read that others have continued to loose hair after stopping the pill and other have begun to see regrowth. I can't testify as of yet, being the first day. But I believe that it will get better. Have hope. I know how devestating this can be emotionally for women. At least now we've learned what the cause is and don't have to accept that we will continue to loose our hair.
Srg0424 - I just found this site while trying to figure out why I am having some major hair loss!!! It's freaking my out. I too thought I might be stressed and not know it or something. But after reading everyone's posts it all makes sence. I was off my previous pill for about three months, switched to Lowestren and in my second month of taking the pill my hair is falling out. Handfulls each time I shower! It is mostly the top of my head and at my temples. My Bangs are VERY thin you can see my scalp though pieces of hair. My husband said it's karma for me making fun of his bald head. hahaha I'm calling my Doctor. I don't know if my body will get used to it or if I should quit cold turkey.
Shocknawed - My teenage daughter has been on Loestrin for the past year. Her hair has been falling out in piles and I thought it was due to stress and heavy athletics from cheerleading. After evaluating all possible causes and being routed to this site, I am sure it is the bc pills. I'll be calling the doctor in the morning. Thanks for the information everyone. I hope a fraction of her hair comes back...it is gone from the sides. I will post once she is on something different to see if her hair health comes back.
Serena40 - I took Loestrin Fe24 for about 6 or 7 months. I started to notice more and more hair loss as the months went on. I stopped taking the pill about 2 months ago and notice that my hair is still falling out, but not as much. I have not noticed any hair regrowth to the sides of my head, but do notice fine hairs coming in at the hairline by my forehead. Not sure what to do, going to see a derm for help.
Eye - after switching from yaz to loestrin 24 FE I am horrified at the loss of hair. Within just 2 months of getting on loestrin I noticed my hair falling out in bunches. I had wonderful thick hair so I wasn't too worried until now. 9 months later I can see the crown of my scalp with a receeding hairlne as men do. I am on loestrin to help migraines and even out hormones but the end result is more dreadful tthan what I was dealing with before. Should I just get off the pill entirely or go back to yaz, I am nervous because I don't know if it will make me lose more hair. Any advice?
Hoppiorgo - I've been experiencing hair loss for about 10 months now. I believe it is due to going on and off the pill. Once I was off the pill, I started to notice thinning so I decided to go back on, hoping it would stop the hair loss. After doing research and taking time to consider what I was putting in my body, I decided to quit the pill completely. My hair loss was steady for about three month until I experienced much more shedding (a mass shed is coming a few months after discontinuing bc use). I haven't noticed much improvement (especially not around my hairline), but I continue to have hope. I will say this much though, synthetic hormones are unnatural for our body, thus the negative side effects. Some women will never see side effects from the pill. I guess I would consider us the sensitive ones. Even though my hair hasn't gotten much better, I feel healthier without the synthetic hormones in my body. I plan to stay off the pill forever.
Turnert6 - After reading these comments, I'm gonna reconsider this pill. I was suppose to start tonight, however, I want to keep my hair and stay free of migranes. Thanks for the info.
Jennalarue - I started this pill and it made my boobs grow a whole size bigger and made TONS of my hair fall out. I am so upset about it and will not be taking it any longer. It also makes you very depressed and have terrible mood swings!
Loestrin24taker - When I started taking Loestrin I experienced hairloss. However, within 6 months, my hair grew back and is now normal if not thicker. Hope that helps :)
Sandy888 - I was taking this pill for just 5-6 mos when my blood-panel results showed sudden jump in cholesterol and low thyroid ! I NEVER ever had high cholesterol (checking it every year as part of my physical as well as my Thyroid ) and all of my labs always were in super optimal range. This was a shocker for me and although my GP made no connection with my BC, it was my immediate concern and I stopped using it pronto !!!! My cholesterol improved just 2 mos later as well as my thyroid panel but my hair is still "recovering" : (((. Hair texture is completely changed - wispy and very fine and dry : (((, unlike my thick, shiny and lively hair I had before Loestrin24 . I am frustrated to no end and nobody believes me that Loestrine caused it ( not my GP nor my Gyn ) !!!! I do not understand - how a product like this can be on the market and nobody cares : ( ???
It is now almost a year since I stopped Loestrin but my hair is still pitiful and I am loosing hope I will ever have my beautiful hair back : ((( Please, if you are considering taking this pill , take your time and make research about other pills and contraceptive options !!!!! I wish I did *sigh : (((
Moniczka55 - Monika - I've been on Loestrin for about 4yrs...I liked short periods and didn't noticed and major side effects....the only weird thing was that my hair stopped growing....I mean totally stopped...they were not shedding like crazy...but were thin and just not healthy...now I can see why:) after reading all reviews
I stopped the pill about 8 months ago...my hair started growing nicely again about 3 months ago...wow I wished I would of research earlier...on another note I was told to put crashed BC pils in a shampoo instead...wow I guess it works because again since Ive done that my hair grow so nicely and they feel so much thicker...I also take GNC multivitamin for women including extra ingridients for healthy hair, skin and nails ..yes leadies get some biotin!!!!!
Lolalou424 - I got off Yaz in December and started Loestrin in late March. Ever since I started Loestrin my hair has been falling out in massive amounts (up to 400 some days). I got off Loestrin mid-May because I had spotted the entire time with no periods, terrible mood swings, and hair falling out in clumps. I am scared because I don't know if my hair loss is due to getting off Yaz or getting on Loestrin. Does anyone know if 1 1/2 months on Loestrin is long enough to affect my hormones that much, to the point of prolonged hair loss? I'ts June and my hair is still falling out, help!!
