I got Mirena inserted to help with my very heavy bleeding (sometimes for 2 months straight) for a condition called Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Initially I loved the Mirena because it lightened my periods into non-existence, which I of course thought was a god send. Several months later I started getting panic/anxiety attacks,(NEVER had either in my life prior) horrible cramping, insomnia,(was always a very good and heavy sleeper prior) memory loss, I went from a B cup to a D cup bra, and I was gaining weight in my lower abdominal area. At first I didn't correlate the weird symptoms with the Mirena because my OBGYN told me the hormones didn't cause side effects. It wasn't until my sister asked me if I was having negative side effects with my IUD because she and my cousin talked and they both coincidentally had the same symptoms I had been experiencing. Took out Mirena 8 days ago and I have been sleeping like a baby, no more panic attacks(as of yet) and my breasts and lower ab area are already noticeably going back down. However, for what lasted about 4 days post mirena removal, I had a crash where I got depressed, REALLY nauseated, had NO appetite and I was constipated, then it all passed and I haven't felt this energetic and happy since before I had Mirena inserted. My cousin got hers removed and is doing great as well. My sister is scheduling hers to be removed in the next week. From what I have read about Mirena, it produces a synthetic form of progesterone called progestin and it tells your body that you are prego, even though you're not. Hence the increase in breast tissue/no periods and crazy emotions. Not everyone has a negative reaction like this but my cousin, sister and I certainly did so I hope my post will help other women out there realize they are not crazy and that there is a good possibility their problems could be linked to this devil I like to call Mirena.
