I had my Mirena IUD removed on Monday, May 5, 2008. I had it inserted on November 10, 2005. I was having major side effects from the birth control, and every doc I went to said that there is no way that Mirena would cause the side effects I was having because the "progesterone amounts are too low to cause these side effects". I have had the following side effects:
WEIGHT GAIN
JOINT PAIN
LUMPS IN BREASTS
BREAST TENDERNESS
HUNGER (as if i were pregnant)
DEPRESSION
LOSS OF SEX DRIVE
HAIR LOSS
SWOLLEN ABDOMEN (BLOATED?)
HEADACHES
GROUCHY/ON EDGE
ACNE
CYST (had a couple weeks ago... i was on vacation in Vegas and had a cyst burst.. never had these issues... this was the last straw)
STABBING PAINS IN ABDOMEN AND IN AREA OF OVARIES

As of today, Friday, May 9, 2008 (4 days after Mirena has been removed) I have lost 9 pounds. I am sure this is probably water weight? I am feeling a little better every day. The night I got home from having it removed, I had major mood swings... would be happy one minute and crying my eyes out the next!!! I would not recommend this IUD to ANYONE.. not even on my worst enemy (if I had one). This needs to be taken off the market. It is not safe! I have spent thousands of dollars on ultrasounds on my breasts (thinking i could have cancer because the lumps i had in my breast) and on other doctors bills to figure out what was wrong with me.. only to find out that "Mirena is not the cause"!!!!

I have not yet had my mirena removed. But I fully have the intentions.
I'm 18 yrs old and just had a baby 3 months ago. My mother insisted that I have mirena as birth control. According to her I am not responsible enough to remember the pill. Anyways, my doctor told me i might experience some spotting after the placement. I have since then not stopped bleeding. I did notice however that after sex I bleed alot heavier. I experience pain during sex and am constantly having severe moodswings. The first few days after getting mirena the strings were almost sticking out of my vagina. About 2 weeks ago I got a UTI. I was rushed into the ER with abdominal pains, and the inability to urinate, It was bad enough for me to be admitted to the hospital for two days. I don't recommend this method of B.C. for anyone!! I am making plans to have it removed asap. To be honest, I am terrified of the effects this could have on my uterus. Please do not use MIRENA,,,,,,,,

Sugabooga - Well, I too have had the Mirena IUD removed. It was making my life crazy, my body out of wack and my relationships with the ones i loved almost impossible. I also suffered from moderate depression and my Dr. put it off as that but being 25 and knowing my body, i knew something was wrong. I was 19 when i had my twin boys and decided that the twins were enough for me so i opted to get the Mirena. At first it was a blessing, no periods, no worries of becoming pregnant again. Now almost 5 years later...two monthes shy of removing it for good..i decided i could not take it anymore. The last year and a half have been horrible. I was always known to have beautiful long hair and now thats not the case. My hair began to fall out and what was left was dry and brittle. My skin broke out in horrible acne for the past 3 years and nothing would take it away. The mood swings i would have were unbearable to me and those around me. I was constantly tired and irritable. My sex drive was almost non existant. I gained approx 15 pounds and never changed my eating habits. I would not get my period but almost 3 weeks out of the month I had cramping, bloating and fatigue. The bloating almost never went away and i was looking like i was 6 monthes pregnant. Today I removed the Mirena and after reading several post before and after removal, im confident in my decision.
Amb2421 - I have had the Mirena in since May 2nd, 2008 and for the first month I had HEAVY bleeding, but after that now I get 3 day light/moderate periods. My mood has always been B*****..lol That has stayed the same... It seems to be okay for me, but everyone is different. I am HORRIBLE at taking the pills and got pregnant on the patch and the shot made me gain 30 pounds in 2 months.. So this is pretty much my only option. My weight with this has stayed the same losin 2-3 pounds then gaining it back. I do believe that having the Mirena has effected my weight because usually without it when I diet I lose more weight and DONT gain it back.. I have 2 children and am 21. I am getting married in August and CAN NOT take the chance to get it out right now but do plan on getting it removed at least 2 months before the wedding in case I do get pregnant I can still be little.. and fit into my dress!!
Mommyof3boys - I have had it for 5 years. I have had minor issues, other than not having a perird which I like. I do have mood swings but I think that is part of being a woman. I have gained weight, and am having a hard time losing it. I am going to get it out today and am Not getting another! I was wondering if anyone has another form of BC they could reccomend? my friend got hers out and 5 days later dropped 6 pounds. I am tired ALL the time, moody, in constant pain and have not had a period in 5 years. I spot here and there, but nothing big. Any ideas?
Mon_cheree - OK ALL!! I have an uopdate.. Its been 9 months since I have had my Mirena IUD removed. And let me tell you what it was the best thing I HAVE EVER DONE! In the first month I lost 10 pounds, my breast tenderness went completely away.. lumps GONE, headaches gone, back and hip pain GONE. After 3 months, my hair loss stopped... thank god. But, I am still trying to repair the damage from using Mirena (regarding my hair loss). I am using a scalp and hair treatment called Nioxin and it has helped greatly in the past six months with that issue but my hair is not as thick as it used to be. In the past 9 months I have lost a total of 35 pounds by doing absolutely NOTHING AT ALL. I have not had any UTI's since this evil Mirena was removed from my body. I have a SEX DRIVE AGAIN!! Thank god.. I was feeling like an 80 year old woman on mirena in regards to my lack of interest in sex. I am so happy that I am back to normal... and my OB/GYN has NOW confirmed (after the fact) that all those problems WERE IN FACT the Mirena IUD. It doesn't take a genius to figure it out... and I hope those of you who are still suffering decide to take a better route in pregnancy prevention. Good Luck!! much love... Monica

I am 36 years old with a 8 month old son. I got the Mirena placed in February 2009 and had the most difficult time. I had horrible headaches, fatigue, my stomach was bloated, sharp intense stomach pains, gained about 15 pounds (after losing my pregancy weight), breasts enlargment went up two cup sizes, hair thining, heavy bleeding, back pain. I had the Mirena removed in June 15, 2009. Two days later June 17, 2009 I have bleeding profusely and having heavy cramping. I have consulted my doctor she will monitor my bleeding to see if it is possible hemorrhaging due to IUD removal or possible scarring. I will post my condition in a few days.
I do not think the Mirena is a good idea for anyone!! Please reconsider if you are thinking of getting this.......
Wmninpain - I got my Mirena the beginning of Feb. I had the painful cramping when it was inserted but after that went away I had no problems until 4th of July weekend (almost exactly 6 months). I had breast tenderness and increased size. I also had nausea and thought i was pregnant so i took a test but it was negative. i had pain during sex. it seemed if i was sitting or laying for a long period it would come on or hurt more. so i tried to keep myself always moving. I had pain i can only describe as someone twisting my insides in my lower abdomen. I hated it! I was popping ibu 600 like they were nothing to get rid of the pain. the pain only lasted like 15-20 min but it felt like forever. I called my doctor and they said it was my period coming. its been 2 weeks and no blood. i know my body and this is not a period nor the symptoms. so after persistant calling i finally got checked out by the nurse practitioner since my doc wasnt in. the iud was still in place cuz she could see the strings and they were short. she did a culture for an infection because i said i had a strange vaginal discharge. then she inserted 2 fingers in me and pressed on my lower stomach and i was crying in pain it hurt so bad.....so theres the proof its not my period coming. it was pain right where the iud was and i knew something was wrong. im supposed to follow up but i just made an appt to get it out!!!
Mon_cheree - GOOD GIRL! Get that evil thing removed! You will be so happy, I have NO SYMPTOMS anymore! Its been a year since mine has been removed, and I have lost 33 pounds since! I feel so much more normal now.. no abdominal pain.. no bloated stomach.. no bleeding after sex... YAY.. glad I have ME back!!!
Mamasaurus - I don't know why i never bothered reading things like this BEFORE i got my mirena iud put last year in may. I just have it taken out last week because my husband and i are wanting to have another baby. since i've had the iud in i thought i was having a hard time loosing weight because i was lazy or not eating right (which is kinda true) but a couple of months ago i decided since i wanted another baby i needed to loose weight in order to have a healthy pregnancy. i lost a little but not enough to make me feel motivated. in the last week i've lost 10lbs!!!! i can't believe that little s*** kept me fat!!! also, i thought i was just a moody person and tired and stressed and i just lived with it. This past week after having my iud out i feel great! not moody any more. After this pregnancy i will definitely NOT be getting another iud, I will be looking for alternative birth control for sure
Kalcam - I had the mirena for 3 yrs, but had it removed because I had intense bleeding for 3 weeks. So I went to the Dr and they did an ultrasound and sure enough it had flipped and was falling out. It has been 2 weeks now and I feel great, no mood swings, being tired etc...I have a new method of birth control and will try it very soon, but am loving being me again.
Dprasad87 - OMG i am so happy i read this I am making an appointment to have mine taken out today!! I have gained so much weight its CRAZY.... I weigh more now then i did when i was pregnant. I have tried everything to lose weight but nothing has worked. I am hoping that the removal of the Mirena will do the trick to loosing some weight!! Bubblenjanice - That mirena iud was horrible i had it for a year and i gained 23 pounds. i had massive mood swings, car sickness, memory loss, anxiety, depression, tiredness, irritability, vertigo. i wanted to be alone. i felt off balance and in a fog. i had my mirena removed november 24th, 2009. i had several uncontrolable mood swings i was feeling horrible at first but now i am feeling normal again and i have lost three pounds.
Leeanna - I the mirena in july 2009 to ease my heavy periods, i gained 14ibs dispite going to the gym 3 times a week and not changing my diet. I had spotting for three months after insertion, my sex drive disappeared alltogeter, really not like me! I was so fed up and couldnt get an appointment when i wanted so i remved it myself Really stupid I no! Should have known better than to do this as I am a nursing sister on ITU. However I had done it and for few days everything was fine, day 4 OMG severe pain and very heavy bleeding, stabbing pain on my right side to went see Gyn Doc having ultra sound tomorrow. The bleeding just getting worse and feel really crap, will this happen every month or just because I had the coil out?
Jlobikis - I had the mirena inserted a week ago and I am ready to to get it remove, Today is Sat. and my doc. office is close or else I would go in there and ask for it to be remove ASAP. I have this terrible pain in my uterus that a i cannot even sit. I can feel the IUD poking out of my skin when I wipe down there. It hurts, I wish i read all this Info. before the insertion. This is crazy, I can;t believe it is even a choice after so many failed experience.
Haldox - Its been 1 week since Mirena removal!
Inserted May 05, had it for the whole 5 yrs and didnt put 2 and 2 together for the last 4.5 yrs, that it was this evil causing so many things wrong with me. I have had almost all the horrible side effects but when inserted was only told about Mirena maybe being expelled, embedded or shorter/heavier periods, nothing about the HELL I went through.
Removal was nothing compared to the pain of having it inserted! As soon as I got up off the table I immediately felt lighter, as in I didnt feel this heaviness coming from my abdomen.
I have been doing great since! I no longer RAGE at everyone in my household , can think better, higher sex drive, no more pain during sex, more patience , less fatigue, etc!!. The only thing is I have been really bloated for the last 5 days but that could be contributed to it being less than 1 week until my next period(if its on time, it was very regular with Mirena in).
I have had thinning hair for the last 3 yrs and an increase in facial, chest hair, also my leg hair is so thick, dark and grows like there is no tomorrow and lots of acne.
I know this is in fact due to having Mirena but I am wondering if any other ladies had this and how long it took after removal to start new hair growth on the scalp? Will the facial hair wane??
Lilmisswounderfull - i also hve the iud and i am experinceing every thing you have mention except the lumps in breast i have a appt today and im tellin them to remove it. after i had my son in 2007 i weighed 126 i know weigh a little over 140 pounds and i also have a appetiate as if i was pregeant . this def has to be looked into woemn are getting the mirena and are not being told all the side effects. i suffer with really bad mood swings and i used to be a happy person 24 seven the mirena has chamged my life dramatically and not in a good way either.....i cant count the cyst i have gotten and the pain from them bursting but yet im looked at by the doctors and the er like it is nothing worse then a dang cold ...please please do your homework on the iud my thoughts alone would to be not to have it done...
Noahrileysmommy - TOTALLY AGREE! I would not advise ANYONE to get Mirena! It is the WORST decision I have made! I had my 1st child in Aug. 2009 and at my 6 wk ck up, I had the IUD inserted. (at this time i weighed 130) .. I bled for a good 3 to 4 months straight! .. since then i have had no period. I began to have all these symptoms:
-Mood Swings 24/7 (to the point it was damaging my marriage)
-Weight Gain ( i now weigh 160 ... and can not loose to save my life)
-Nausea in the morning and late at night (took numerous preg. tests)
-Cystic Acne (which i never had)
-Hair loss ( this has just started ab a month ago)
-Bleeding after sex
-No Sex drive
-Sharp pains around my ovary's when i would move or turn a certain way
-numerous BV infections (which i read can be caused by a bacteria on the iud strings)
-NO ENERGY
and i am only 21
I have scheduled to get this terrible thing Removed OCT 11th && cannot wait!!
Maybe my life will get back to normal and i will be my old self again!
Donotusemirena - I have had my Mirena Removed on Monday 4 days ago, I now have Heavy red Bleeding and Cramping and I'm waiting for the doctor to call me. During 9 months of the Mirena, I Have suffered Major Depression, Anexity, Mood Swings, Breast Enlargement, No Sex Drive and Constant Sinus, Acne and Hives and Breathing Problems, All of which the Doctor was telling me was not caused by the Mirena!!!! Monday Afternoon after the removal the sinus started to disappear, Tuesday Morning Sinus all Gone, Hives Going Down, Headache Gone, Mood Getting Better, If these things were not caused by the Mirena, then its amazing how they are all now going away, I have a lump in my armpit which showed up 3 months ago and now I have to go for medical tests to find out what the lump is, The doctor still tells me the Mirena has not caused any of this but reading all of the posts in the internet, too many people have the same symptions

I had Mirena put in after my second child was born I was promised no more periods, less acne and let me tell you I had nothing but problems with my iud for 5 years. I kept the iud in for 5 years because i paid over $500 for it. But I had heavier periods, ovarian cysts that would burst and be very painful. My iud would literally stab me once in a while when i was walking. My sex drive was lowered and there are so many positions that i could not do because my husband would get stabed with the iud during intercourse. I had horrible back pains, my face would break out all of the time and my stomach was always bloated and i put on over ten pounds and could not get it off.
I just had the iud removed a week ago. I feel better already! My stomach is not as puffy, I feel like i have lost weight. It did send me into another period after getting it out but i feel better without it in.
My doctor could not find my iud when he went to remove it!!!! It moved and i think it did some damage that is taking time to heal! I had sex for the first time since it was removed and now i am bleeding again! I hope it heals fast but I am happy to not have it inside me anymore. I do not recommend Mirena to anyone!!!

I am 44 and had the Mirena placed Novemer 10th. The first few days I felt great. I could feel the hormones entering my system but it actually felt good- like when I use the tiniest bit of natural progesterone cream for PMS and migraines. Natural progesterone cream has been noted to be a mood elevator, pms reliever, and more. I recognized the feeling and liked it.
But by Thanksgiving I was beginning to feel sad and emotionally sensitive . I cried over everything it seemed. I overreacted to a comment my new boyfriend (of several months)made jokingly. Normally I would have laughed. But instead I cried. So weird.
By the second week of December I was secretly crying every day. I kept trying to get a handle on what was wrong. Sure, I have things in my life that are challenging or even sad, but I had become such a weak crybaby. omg.
By Christmas I had gone up a pant size and was having the worst anxiety attacks in the middle of the night. Really awful, like I was going to come out of my skin. I also had a couple of anxiety attacks while shopping- had to just get out of the store. Of course I was with my boyfriend and by then I was always trying to explain to him that something was wrong with me b/c of the Mirena. He hadn't said anything but I knew I was not acting myself.
Then I YELLED at him at Christmastime over nothing.
I began to feel foggy and would forget things at work.
By January: Crying every day. Went to a counselor. Felt so edgy and like I needed to just run away.
Also, became dry down there and felt less sex drive.
I just had it removed today. It is strange, I already feel better. My OB said that I would feel better by tomorrow if my moodiness was caused by the Mirena. 6 hours later I already feel lighter! Is that possible?
I left with a diaphram and peace of mind.
btw- for me, the Mirena insertion hurt like a m****r f****r (I actually screamed). No kids is why, they say. The removal only caused bad cramping, so it is not as bad for those of you that found the insertion painful.
After 2.5 months of me being a daily freak, my boyfriend is 'giving me a break' from him. I hope I don't lose him b/c of the stupid Mirena. How ironic would that be?!
But, at least with the Mirena out of me, I am emotionally good and I feel excited about life again.

Stef3928 - Stephanie, Az- I am so happy to find this site. Now I know that I am not alone. I had Mirena put in back in August, 2007. Since then, i have gained almost 50 pounds, i am so moody that no one want to be around me, my hair is falling out by the handful and for the last few months, my eyes have become blurred. I told my doctor about it and she told me that she never heard of anyone gaining that much weight but I know it is because of Mirena. So against here wishes i had it removed today. I dont know how my husband has put up with me all these years because i have been a total monster. I hope i get to feeling normal soon because I know I have not been myself lately and i really feel it was because of the IUD. I will come back to this site and post again in about a month to let you guys know my progress.
Tracylee - Holly crap, I am getting mine out ASAP. I have had it for about 9 months and have had many of the same problems, including such intense breast/shoulder pain that I was convinced I had lung or breast cancer. I actually got it because the insurance company told me I had to try other things for my fibroids prior to being covered for a hysterectomy. Then they charged me $800 as part of my deductible so I have been trying to tough it out since I am still paying payments on it hoping it will get better. Unfortunately it has only gotten worse, especially since my periods have finally stopped in the last couple months. My symptoms have intensified and are keeping me awake at night from back pain. I feel exhausted and depressed and anger, as well as anxious and in constant pain. I am calling my OBG tomorrow.
