This website has been a blessing for me - a person who seemed to feel crazy for all the symptoms I was having. I had mirena put in place in March 2008 after the birth of my second child in December. I was so excited that I didn't have to worry about birth control - I could focus on taking care of my family and work, etc. I couldn't have been more wrong about it. All was fine at first until April of 08 (two months later). I started to notice a red, bumpy rash on the trunk of my body. It progressively got worse with each passing day. It began to look like hives on my legs (behind my knees) and then on the inside of my arms. It has gone all over my back and finally to my face last night. I looked at the mirena website and it said to call your doctor if you had a rash with hives. So I did and they assured me that mirena WAS NOT systemic and couldn't be the problem. They maintained that it was probably an outside source. Instead they offered an anti-depressant. I needed something to help with what I was going through, so I started on Lexapro. That has been the only positive thing that has kept me from falling apart. What's the use in calling them if they don't listen to you? I have finally decided to have the mirena taken out in two days. I am so ready to get back to feeling normal. I was wondering if there was anyone else out there with similar side effects with the rash. If someone would have told me that this was a possibility, I would never have signed up for this!!!!!!

Sln2119 - I had the Mirena placed in Oct 2004 after the birth of my second child. I have since suffered with depression (I suffered periodically from depression anyway, so this didn't seem too unusual), bloating, weight gain, severe headaches, and - now that you mention it - strange unexplained rashes! I never would have associated the Mirena with the rashes, but there you go! The rash has been mostly on my upper back and chest, but I will itch all over my body. No one can seem to give me a reason for it other than an allergic reaction to something I have not been able to identify. I have also had itchy scalp which nothing seems to soothe. I've never had headaches in my life before, but now about once or twice a month I will suffer a severe, debilitating headache that will last about a day. Anyone else have new-onset headaches?
My husband just had a vasectomy, and I told my doctor I want to have the Mirena removed in three months when his doctor clears him. My doctor kept asking me "are you sure you're ready to have periods again?" If it will stop or lessen some of the other symptoms I'm having - YES! I no longer have periods with the Mirena, but for some reason that kind of bothers me, too. Thanks for sharing your experience. It just confirms my decision!
Yvette1 - I too have had severe sideeffects from the mirena. I just had it removed today because my doctor said it caused me to have endometrititis not (endometriosis). This causes swelling of the uterus, abdominal pain,cramping,and bleeding. I not only had to pay for this mirena to be removed but for the antibiotics and pain killers to get rid of this infection. The mirena also caused me to have hives that the doctors told me was from stress and they prescribed me lexapro and zantex too. If you know how to get in on a class action lawsuit please let me know. Lace1985 - I had my iud in for a week, when i started getting a rash on my body that i first thought was poison ivy, but after a steroid shot and a week of steroid pills, it just got worse and became more hive like. It was horrible. I couldn't figure out what i could be allergic to, then i asked my doctor if it could be my iud. He said there was like a 1 in 10000 chance! I got it removed the other day and my rash is already improving! im not happy about it because i had it in for less then two monthes, and spent all that money! I even had to go to the emergency room one night, my hives got so bad.
Robin_07 - I, too, had a terrible, itchy hive-like rash appear on my stomach and back and face about 3 months after getting my IUD. My doctor thought it was an allergic reaction to something like Posion Ivy. I took 7 different medicines he prescribed for me, to no avail. The rash was not only not getting better, it was getting worse and worse by the day! After doing some research, I decided to try taking out my IUD to see if that was the culprit. Two days after having it removed I started noticing the rash go away, and a week later it was fully gone. Strange!
Denniemel - I have had a rash on my back since about 2 months after insersion. I went to the doctor finally about 1 month after the rash started, as I thought I could just treat it myself. They treated it as a fungal infection (nothing). Then as a viral infection(nothing). Then they did a biopsy and thought it was a reaction to a bug bite (nothing). Now I went to a dermatologist and she thought it was eczema. I've been on that steroid cream for a week now and it's still speading all over. Started on my back and stayed right there for months. Now it's on my back, legs, elbows and going to the tops of my feet. It's driving me nuts with the constant itching. The worst is that no one has even mentioned anything about this possibly being connected to Mirena, but after reading all these postings, I'm certain that has to be what it is. That sucks, because I LOVE everything else about the IUD. I've had no problems at all and don't even get my period anymore (YEAH!!!) But living with this rash is far worse than a period every month. I'm going to make an appointment with my OB tomorrow. Thanks everyone for sharing your stories so now maybe I can get some releif from this CONSTANT ITCHING!!
Timmytumunga1 - I've had my mirena for 3 months now and I'm one who gets hives at least once a year normally from something I've eaten... I take benadryl and after a day or so it starts to go away. This time however the strangest thing the hives came up and went down but never left... I wake up itching every night and I feel that its something else like my body is rejecting the mirena and about two months ago my hair started to fall out... OMG like tons of hair and it doesnt stop! I thought at first maybe it was just my hormones getting back to normal from having my second child ... but the more it came out I was convinced that it was something else so I started looking around on here and what do you know all these crazy symtoms I had never heard them say anything about were popping up like crazy! One woman even claims all her hair fell out and since getting the Mirena removed ... Only one month her hair has started to come back! I'm over this and I will be calling monday morning bright and early to get this thing out!
Naler22 - May 28 I got the Mirena inserted. July 18th I got a small hive rash behind my knee, the next three nights it was SEVERE hives all over my body. I changed EVERYTHING in my house. Washed my couches, re washed everything. Came down to what I was taking. Didn't eat the same thing for four days other than water. Then I called to get my IUD removed on 22JUL. I'm hoping the rash will go away. If anyone had a rash and got the IUD removed, did it help make the rash go away!?! I hope it does mine :)

Mirenarashgirl - I had the Mirena implant put in Jan 2007 - until Feb 5, 2010. It was put in after my 2nd child and I was 43. Within a few months a rash appeared on my finger that wouldn't go away for 18 months. Since I had exzyma about 20 years prior so thought it was coming back to due hormonal changes. The rash on the finger finally went away but the rash was on my right leg and spread symetrically on elbows, arms, sides of the hip and back of legs. I've been to the dermotologist several times and thought I had Celiac's disease. I began a gluten free diet but the rash didn't get any better. I let years pass since my last gyn vist and since he inserted the Mirena. Yesterday had my GYN visit, he said he's seen the rash before with others who Mirena implanted. He removed it and I'm hoping the rash goes away (the scars are horrible). I...like many others never made the connection and have had awful headaches, weight gain, hair loss, mood swings, joint pain. I've been to the doctor more times in the past 3 years than I have been in my whole life. Mirena should be removed or banned, it's side effects are horrible and many do not make the connection. Let me know if a class action lawsuit is brewing...I would definitely love to tell this company what I've been through for the past 3 years.
Lizie1027 - I just got my Mirena removed because it is the only explanation for the hives all over my body!!! Does anyone have any stories of how long it takes for the hives to go away after the Mirena is out?????
Denniemel - @Lizie1027 - It only took a few days for the itching to subside...maybe about a week to totally go away. Such a fast, awesome relief after how long I had the rash before I self-diagnosed the problem. Good job having it removed!
Lace1985 - I had horrible hives after I got the iud, and then after getting it removed they went away. But after my second baby was born, I got the same hive like rash, and I did not have the iud. The hives were not as bad and did not last as long as when I had the iud the first time. The doctors still can't give me a reason why I had these strange rashes after both of my children were born. It might be hormonal, or I could be allergic to husbands dna or something like that. I do know it was 10 times worse when I had the iud in and disappeared the next day after getting mirena removed. I don't think that could just be coincidental. If anyone else knows what causes this allergic reaction, please share! I'm scared to have another child, because of the horrible reaction after!
Lizie1027 - Thanks for the replies. I am trying to be patient. I had the IUD removed Wednesday and have four new hives since :-( I just wish someone could get to the bottom of this. It is maddening!!!
Mekel - I have broken out on my Gina with hives and bumps that itch I thought that my husband had cheated on me I was so scared however I got to thinking about it and it didn't burn when I peed I have also had sharp stomach pains and joint pains after the mirena this type of birth control shld be banned I wld not get this again
Aemalia - I have been through a mess with all of this too. This past March I started getting a rash, just one bump on my chest so I had my dad spray for bug/spiders but even after he sprayed it just kept getting worse. By the end of April I was in a lot of pain and ended up in the ER and was told it was an allergy of some kind. I was given prednisone for about a week. When it was out i was back in the ER with my whole face swollen and I couldn't walk because the hives had gone to the bottom of my feet. I was given prednisone again and gave a lot of blood for testing. I only had enough prednisone for May and went back into the ER on May 31 again. I've been to the allergist, a dermatologist, and my OBGYN. My allergist says to get my iud out but my OBGYN doesn't think it's my iud. I'm supposed to get my iud out Monday July 2nd.
Rita40 - I have a rash that has caused extreme itching. I can't even sleep. I had the Mirena inserted Feb of 2011. The rash started around April of the same year. I don't know if this has any relevance but it has completely driven me insane. I never had skin problems before. After hearing all of this, I think maybe I'll have it removed. I too, went to a Dermatologist several times, it got depressing, and to no avail, all I was told is that I have Urticaria, no explanation. I also went to the ER. I thought all kinds of crazy stuff, STD's, Bed bugs, Scabies and allergies. Nothing else is going on me, just the consistent rashes that is messing up my skin. Could it be due to not getting my period? Maybe it's messing up my hormones. Please give some feedback ladies. HELP!

When I had my twins in 2006, I went on the mirena IUD after I had my 8 week aunt flow. Ever since I did that, I get these terrible rashes under my breasts and on my bikini line. There's a nasty smell that comes from these and they hurt ever so badly. Half the time, I can't walk, let alone move off my bed. I have taken so many things for this because the dr said it was a yeast infection. I have been in the hospital for it as well because it actually got so bad that where the infection was, it was also bleeding. I was told by the ER that it was a yeast infection gone bad. Well October 2011 came around and we decided to try for a boy....had the IUD taken out, rashes stopped and blam! I became pregnant. No rashes during my pregnancy with my son, then August this year came, had my son, 8 weeks later, put the IUD in and hey what do ya know, rashes came back. I have timed this rash for the last year and this is what I have discovered: everytime I start my period, within a couple hrs of it starting or suppose to be starting theres the rash. I am going in on Sept 10 to have this removed and go straight to the pill. I hope this helps you guys out.
Jnh43 - I got my 5 year mirena IUD placed two days ago on Monday, October 1st. About 24 hours later I started to itch on my back, chest, and shoulders. By Wednesday, it was everywhere- my back, shoulders, arms, neck, chest, stomach, thighs, butt, and vagina. The itching is very, very hard to bare. I went to the doctor's today (Wednesday), and had it removed. They told me that they had never seen this reaction before. Its now wednesday night, and I started taking benadryl today and am hoping that this itching and rash goes away ASAP.
Can14 - Hi ladies, I got my Mirena March 1, 2012 and in April started noticing the hives. At first it was happening every other day a couple times in one day and it could be anywhere on my body, then gradually the hives started appearing everyday and everyday I was taking an antihistamine. I have allergy testing today and I haven't been able to take any antihistaimines for three days, I orginally thought the antihistamines weren't working anymore and I have been WRONG! These last three days I have been living in hive hell, hives have been appearing in numerous spots at one time, once they go away another rounds starts...it's been like this 24 hours a day. I'm doubtful they'll find anything at my allergy appoinment today, I truly believe after reading all your posts the hive/rash problem is directly related to the Mirena, I've made a doc appointment to have it removed this coming Monday...heck at this point I'm tempted to take it out myself. I really appreciate you all sharing your experiences using Mirena and I hope you all have found some relief since your posts.
