Any one explain this....
Recherche88 - Thank you so much for posting this paper. I am a molecular and cellular biologist. I am not a physician, but I can get the gist of this paper in general. This study is demonstrating morphological effects caused by Mirena - or specifically the progesterone released by Mirena - on the uterine lining. Morphology is just a fancy word for "change". It specifically means change in shape or appearance. After skimming the introduction and methods section, most of the information about the study can be found in the discussion. I can guess what some of these words mean just from context. I am accustomed to reading scientific papers so I know how they are organized. This is a study of 75 women using the Mirena. First, they are saying that in the endometrium (uterine lining) there are changes that they would expect to see from localized progesterone. Decidualization is a process where cells prepare for embryo implantation during pregnancy. In one woman they see this "decidualization" in "stromal cells" which is in a different area than the uterine lining. This makes them believe that the progesterone is not as local as people may think. So it spreads further than the uterus. Then they mention some things that I do not know what exactly they are, but I do read that these things lead them to suspect a "superimposed infectious process", or more simply your body is fighting an infection. Then they go on the explain some tests that provide further data to support an immune response. An immune response similar to what you may have when you are sick with a flu or something - I am guessing. Atypia means abnormal cells. They say they see this in three cases but it does not appear to be a problem with the IUD. So that is good news. Later they say that progesterone reverses hyperplasia, which is abnormally high cell division rates. In summary, they are saying that the progesterone is doing what it is supposed to do in the body via mirena, the plastic itself is causing a response and change in the body that it is supposed to, and that they did this study to tell medical personnel these facts.
