I have had a merina in for 12 months to reduce heavy periods as tehre was no change I went back to the doctors to have it removed only to find it had been out of position, so had another one inserted and some blood tests as i was feeling unwell, depressed,weight gain,itching eyes, feeling cold, insomnia,heart palpitations,headaches the tests showed i had hyperthyroidism yet i had more symptoms of hypothyroidism i feel this was caused by mirena but the doctors deny it yet looking into different sites the above symptoms are very common so i don't know if i feel unwell due to the merina of the thyroid will be going to the specialist this week hopefully to find out has anyone else had hyperthyroidism diagnosed while on mirena
Nhargrove - I have had the Mirena since March 08 and I was just diagnosed with hypothyroid. I have never had problems with my thyroid and actually right before I had the insertion of the Mirena my blood work showed that I was healthy. I suffering from sharp pains in my right side and I want this thing out of me. I asked the doctor do the Mirena and the thyroid have anything to do with one another and they deny it, but I know my body and I know it DOES.
Basssara - Wow, I am going through the same thing. I am calling tomarrow to have it removed!! I now have hypothyroidism as well. There has to be some way to prove that this is caused by the Mirena. It can't be a coincidense that we all have the same thing happen. Too common. I hope you all are doing well now.
Sam611 - I was just diagnosed last week with hyperthyroidism after having the Mirena for about 7mos (I am 33 years old with two small children). I, too, pointed the finger at Mirena (due to many other side effects) and the Dr. just brushed it off as far-fetched. I'm considering removing it, regardless of what the Dr.s think...it may just solve the problem, since having one's hormones out of whack can cause what they call "reversal thyroidism". It's worth a shot! Best of Luck to you!
Tsjpop - I had problems, and like an idiot I kept my mirena in for 17 months, until while peeing one day it literally came out with my urine flow, on its own.
I called my doc, who didnt seem happy about the fact it happened, but I had no control over that?!
Two weeks later, positive pg test, 4 months later miscarriage. All the while I had been gaining 3 pounds a week. I miscarried again 4 months later.
I went to the doc to see what was up, got several tests done, and I came back hypothyroid. Now from 175 pounds to 356 pounds in one year, I blame it on the mirena. No matter what I did, (walking, diet, anything) I gained weight steadily.
Help! Im on synthroid (150 mcg's ) for life. Is there something we can do to sue mirena over this? Im tsjpop at cafemom, drop me a line there if youre a member. ~Sharey

Gii - I know this was posted a while ago, but I too got hyperthyroidism after getting the merina, and am curious if anyone else has had this problem, I have 4 children, and got the merina after my third which is when I started loosing weight and getting sick, I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, and was put on methamizole, then about 6 mnths before getting it out stopped taking my meds, got it out got pregnant had no problems with my thyroid, got it back in after having my 4th and now have worse symptoms of they hyperthyroidism, and just started thinking it is the IUD....if anyone knows any relation between the merina and hyperthyroidism (or graves disease) please let me know.
Ckpetrmoon - I too got Mirena about 7 months ago after my 4th child. I went to the ER because my heart rate was 140 at rest. Thought something was wrong with my heart. After probably tons fof tests my TSH was abnormal. found out that I have hyperthyroid. i went to do scans today, meet with the Endocronolgist on thursday. I think it has to do with Mirena. I am going to ask him if I take it out and to test later to see if it made a differnce. I have always been healthy.
Hyperfatigue - Got my Mirena in '08, gained 20 lbs. since, had hot flashes, night sweats, eye twitching, heart palpitations, my pulse was 120 at rest, extreme fatigue, and was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism after having my TSH and T levels tested AT MY REQUEST! The NP kept trying to convince me I was depressed. Now I have to see the endocrinoligist, but I had had made my appointment to have my IUD removed. They made me cancel it and wait to see what the Dr. Comments on it, because they really don't believe it could be because of the Mirena. My TSH levels we're like 2.something before the Mirena. I'm still going to have it removed, and just deal with my heavy periods and migraines like I did my whole life. I don't want to mess with my Thyroid!
Hyperfatigue - oops, sorry for all the typos. I'm so tired and find I lose my trail of thought more often now. i don't know if that's a Hyperthyroid symptom as well. Hopefullly I will get back to my normal, healthy thyroid self once it's removed.
Edyta1406 - Hello Everyone, i had Mirena for 3 years, and last week i got diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, had my Mirena taken out today after my cousin who is a Doctor in Pharmacy, said that there have been studies done stating that birth control does affect thyroid in low percent. I think they are trying to keep it quiet or untill they get enough woman that develop thyroid problem while being on Mirena to do something about or make a warning.

Dreya - I had Mirena inserted in 2010, and was diagnosed as having hypothyroid in August of 2012. Before I was diagnosed, I really didn't have the symptoms that books I have been reading indicate. When I went to see my doctor, she ran a TSH blood test and could tell my thyroid was swollen. I never noticed. With Mirena, I have not had one montly period for the past year and a half. This alone, I think is not normal at all. Us women are supposed to menstrate every month. It is a natural part of our hormone process, so I agree; I think Mirena has a lot to do with why our thyroid's are acting up. Doctor's will tell you that Mirena has nothing to do with it, but I indeed think it does. Soon, I am going to have the Mirena removed, stop taking the Levothyroxine without my Doctor's approval, and then test again for Hypothyroid in about 6 months. This is the only way I am going to really find out weather I have Hypothyroidism.
