Mirena Maintaining Weight Loss, Extreme Mood Swings, Copper Iud, Extreme Convenience, Ovarian Cyst
I have had the Mirena in for 1 1/2 years. I got it inserted about 3 months after having my 4th baby. I have had some side effects but figured it was b/c I just turned 30. I'm wondering now if it is the Mirena. Initially, the only noticeable side effect was that I bled for 3 weeks every month for a year. I also had instances of extreme pain in my pelvic area. I had a sonogram performed and was told I had an ovarian cyst and that it is common in women that have children (the Mirena was never mentioned). During this time, I had a huge sex drive, extreme mood swings and trouble with weight loss. Through dieting, fasting, and consistent exercise, I lost approximately 30 lbs (I never had to work so hard to lose weight!).
I absolutely LOVE the idea of never having to worry about getting pregnant! I have never used any birth control outside of condoms and a diaphragm so the Mirena brought extreme convenience into my life.
Presently, I have occasional headaches (I never get headaches), ZERO sex drive, I am always tired, and I have trouble maintaining weight loss. I never attributed my current side effects to the Mirena because I have had it in for over a year but I am wondering now if I take it out, will these side effects dissipate? ... more »

***Also for anyone considering the copper IUD, I recently read a study performed in Sweden that monitored women with copper IUD's that used cellular phones. A very large number of those women eventually get uterine cancer
