I'm 52yo and have had the Mirena IUD for 7 years (replaced after 5 years). I can honestly say it has been fantastic for me. I thought I might feel less of a woman not getting a period but it was wonderful. Life is busy with 3 children, now 15, 13 & 9, and it was great not to worry about getting my period. I could tell that I was still ovulating regularly up until and about 3 years ago. I''ve just hit menopause and was wondering about having it removed but my doctor has put me on Oestradiol (oestrogen patches). The patches have helped my symptoms of: feeling depressed, not sleeping well, having to go to the toilet at 3am every night, but I must admit my libido has declined and constipation is a problem. I think the constipation is linked to the progesterone from the Mirena but my GP says if I didn't keep it, she would have to prescribe progesterone anyway. So, now I'm not sure whether to have it removed. I'll make an appointment with my gynecologist soon and see what he says. I think my symptoms are menopausal but unsure what effect the Mirena is having, positive or negative. Overall, I would (and have) highly recommend the Mirena. P.S. Fortunately have not put on weight or suffered from acne, etc whilst using Mirena.
