Im glad to see i am not the only one with "side effects". I have had mirena about 2 years now... and have noticed hairloss, but now its to the point of really driving me crazy!!! I have patches and feel like i have lost 60% of my hair. It feels straggly and thing and just plain gross. Also it hurts, even when my hair is down, it feels like its constantly pulling in the spots of thinness and it freaks me out. Does anyone else have that problem... where it actually hurts? I have talked to people and doctors and no one seems to be listening to me. ... more »

I have also experienced extreme moodiness, irritability, depression, and lack of sex drive.. i might have had some of the depression before but nothing like it is now, everything seems to be intensified by 10x!

I have been looking at the side affects on the Mirena official sight and it does say 5% chance of hair loss... i should have googled it sooner and would have found that this is most likely the case of my problems!

Does anyone know , or have had the experience of their hair returning to normal.. or semi normal? I have really curly hair, used to be full and beautiful and i was known for it.. now its like dead strings hanging from my scalp.

I'm only 24.. and this should not be happening!

Sbitseedy - You're definately not crazy! I've had all of these side effects happen to me as well, and it's been effecting my relationship with my boyfriend. We had the baby in February, and everything was fine and normal. I've had mirena for about 3 months and it's been a world-wind difference. I've had bad headaches, depression, NO sex drive (which is the cause of some of our problems) and weight gain, due to an increased appitite...I've gained about 10-15 pounds!!! I'm almost back up to my birth weight! It's gross, I am definately going to have it removed...don't worry, you're not crazy! and I agree i'm only 23, this shouldn't be happening...it's almost like menopause!

Artgirl24 - Thanks for your reply and congrats on your baby :) These things that are happening have also taken a huge toll on my relationship with my boyfriend as well. I know i am driving him crazy and we constantly bicker because i am so over sensitive and emotional to everything! its sad, that this birth control which seems so wonderful, has so many negative affects. I would rather have a bad period any day and use a condom (though no fun) then go through and experience what is happening to me now!

Bprettynpink - That happened to me the first year I had it in and then it stopped I took vitamins and a fish oil ..cannot remember what else I did..it was at my crown and it tingled with pin needle pains .

Mcconmar - I am about your age (22) and the SAME THING is happening to me. I had my Mirena placed in Feb and about two or three weeks after that my hair began thinning. I went to my GYN about 2 months ago and she told me that Mirena does not cause hair loss (she also told me that it doesn't cause acne) so I'm starting to think she doesn't know what she is talking about. I've noticed most of my hair falls out around my hairline (temples, forehead, etc). Tomorrow I am going to a Dermatologist and I'm going to see what he says. I think either way I'm going to have the Mirena removed because girls our age (or any age below 60 for that matter) should NOT be losing hair. UGH! I sympathize, though - you're not alone!

Artgirl24 - This is awful.... i wish doctors and the appropriate people would tell you THE FULL EFFECTS this birth control could have on you. I am mad at myself for waiting so long to get it removed... i didn't want to give up the good points that it does hold.. lighter periods/none,.. no condoms... but the negative effects out way the positive ones 10fold! it upsets me evertime i look in the mirror,.. i am afraid to shower and comb my hair because so much comes out... its like getting a haircut everytime i'm showering and my hair is not growing back fast enough or at all... so frustrating. My hair also falls out around my temples and top of my head... if i could post a picture i would!!!!! I just hope the effects will be reversed or at least stopped once it comes out. I am getting it removed on the 23rd... and i am counting down the days!

Notcreative - I have had Mirena for 5 years in October. I had it put in after getting pregnant with the Copper IUD ( and then miscarried). No pregnancy yet :) I went thru everything you are. Remember you just had a baby, which requires so much more of your time/energy then you can possibly give. It gets better. . . look at your diet and exercise, give your body lots of fresh fruits and veggies (like at every meal) EAT AS MUCH FRESH FRUIT AND VEG as YOU CAN!! Being a mom is difficult, but it is also a wonderful gift. My hair thinned at the hair line too, it grows back. Never hurts to add a multi vit, they can really help supplement lost nutrients. Have to ask your self how much you want to avoid getting pregnant. Good luck with condoms, most monogomus relationships they eventually fail (to be put or left on). Pills made me crazy. I really like that I haven't had a period in over 1 year and had one 6 mo before that. Good luck!

Caribean34 - Hi, OMG i thought i was the only one going through this...went to the doctor recently and told me i have a vitamin d deficiency which contributes to hair loss. However, i've lost so much hair after having the copper iud inserted...my hair used to be full and curly...now is flat, dull and is thinning too...i feel tired and depressed...and heavy menstrual flow..which of course contributes to low iron level...doesn't help my hair. Going to have it removed...after 2 years...is great to have a peace of mind but not worth the side effects...PS..Acne is also a problem with the Paragard.
