Major Problems With the Mirena

I had the Mirena put in November of 2010. I researched it, asked questions, etc. NOWHERE did it say the cruel and evil effects it would have on my body. I had it in for just over two years. It's been out for exactly 1 year. I dealt with weight gain of about 10 pounds, extreme vaginal dryness, and depression. Since I had it removed, my weight has gone back down and my hormone levels have balanced out. Unfortunately I am still trying to regain my vaginal dryness. I have spoken with 5 gynecologists and most blew it off and told me to use a lubricant. Others tried a few options and none worked. NO ONE believes me that it was the Mirena that caused all of this.
I have been researching and now have stumbled upon the fact that I may have POI(Premature Ovarian Deficiency) So not only does that mean I may be infertile, but will cause osteoporosis, and will not allow me to regain my natural state of moisture. ... more »

I am extremely frustrated and regret ever putting that horrible contraption into my body. I have been through hell the past few years and am lucky to have a very understanding boyfriend by my side the whole time. BUT enough is ENOUGH and I can not continue on dealing with this symptoms. I am 21 years old this is ridiculous, I should not be dealing with these problems at such a young age!
If anybody knows any way to help me or refer me to a reliable doctor please tell me. I can't go through this anymore!
Good26 - I have had the Mirena for three years. It started horribly since I have a tilted uterus, giving birth was slightly worse than the pain they called a slight discomfort before agreeing to the insertion. Last summer at work, I noticed whenever my hair was in a ponytail that my head would itch, small bumps at the bottom of scalp, huge hives and welts at the top. Then my right wrist would hurt after working all day. Had carpal tunnel surgery a couple years before, so I thought I had a ganglean cyst, the swelling would look like something blew up in my wrist. Now, after working yesterday, the pain increased, and had swollen lumps all over me the size of lemons. If there is any pressure placed on any part of my body during the day, I am in excruciating pain accompanied by itching and huge welts at night. Steroids shots, pills and antihistamines are not working. Luckily in the morning it is a bit better. After finding all of these comments, I am hopeful that my Mirena is causing all of this. I am having it removed tomorrow! I have also had a very thick vaginal discharge, almost like chunks of a cottony fiber. Now, if I don't douche (which I have never had to do in my life,) ...every week, it starts to stink like something rotten! I have also had serious issues with my thyroid. My T cells were off the charts and I was really hoping that was the cause of this angioedema, but it isn't. I'm also growing depressed and praying that tomorrow having this alien creature ripped from my body will provide some relief. If not, I am scared I am going to die from this, my tongue and throat swells sometimes and I have read that it can cause asphyxia.
Ohpuleez25 - That's crazy. Although not on mirena, I was on nuvaring but I believe they release the same low dose hormones. I too had lost my sex drive completley so much so that it put a huge barrier between my husband and I, I too am grateful he stuck by me through the hell I've gone through. I also have noticed my hair thinning as well. My hair was as thick and full as Taylor swift, now it barely grows and makes a small ponytail when I put it up. I never connected that any of this could be birth control hormones. I also got a few black hairs under my chin and surprisingly and gross I got a few thick black ones coming out. My breasts. Soooo not normal, this has become such a huge problem in women and doctors are not being proactive about it, not even in the least. I wrote a letter to Dr. Phil in hopes he could help expose this horrible mess that's is destroying the lives of women and their families everywhere.
Tallresa - To all of you ladies, (I am getting my Mirena removed soon as I can get an appointment), remember to look at other things we do that are toxic to us. Even shampoos/hair stuff, fast food, other prescription drugs the doc says are "ok"-- everything affects us, and sorry not to preach but I have been reading some horrific stories and my reminder is to be healthy in all ways. no drugs, simple soaps, exercise, good food, plenty of water (not sodas)... I have been there, just want to help.
I regret making the decision for the Mirena in a somewhat rushed manner when I was at the clinic to get my first and last abortion of my life. I have already had a less than ideal month and yet still not happy in the birth control dep't. Wish I could have known to try copper for the first time. Was afraid of the heavier periods, but I am Nature Wench and now that I have felt the nightly cramping, heavy spotting, headaches at front of forehead... Nurse sister nailed it as hormones. Friends told me the copper did not affect them too much, so... hmmm/
Ilovehim143 - i USED to have the Mirena! Insertion was a lil uncomfortable and afterwards was the same with minor cramping..but as days continued i was STILL BLEEDING!! the first 3 weeks of having it i bled like a regular/heavy period. and my OB said it was normal..i thought i was going to die! the bleeding finally stoppedbut it only lasted a week and there i was bleeding again! i that continued for another 3 weeks! i couldnt believe it. it took about 6 months for my body to somewhat adjust as far as the periods went. then all of a sudden i started getting extremely moody!! i would literally smile one second and the next be sobbing!! My sex drive disappeared and could have cared less for anything sexual. THEN! the anxiety started kicking in! i was starting to have panic attacks and for someone who loved to go dancing and hang out with friends turned into a hermit crab because of the anxiety! i decided to take the mirena out but before i made it to the dr i was checking for strings and out it came! i still need to make it to see my OB because even after it came out im still suffering somewhat from anxiety and ALOT of weight gain! My primary Doc gave me some Adivan but im nervous about taking it. :(
Ohpuleez25 - @ Ilovehim, it sounds like your side effects of birth control were the same as mine. I was a respected makeup artist, I really put myself out their, very active in theatre, and was also a waitress. My anxiety got so bad I literally put everything I love on the shelf. Because I was missing so much work due to the panic and anxiety, where I waitresses they let me go after working there for 9 years. I stopped doing makeup for years, I was fortunate my husband has a great paying job or we wouldn't have made it through the insanity. I closed myself off not only to the general public to which I was very known to also being a hermit crab because the thought of going out of my comfort zone ( my home ) was dibilitating to even think about, my heart would race and I would feel breathless. When I took out my birth control I almost immediatley noticed a difference. I started booking makeup appointments and scheduling jobs within 3 days of being off of it, I have enough energy to clean my whole house and then some and my sex drive came back ( my husband has been sexually starved the last four years ) and I feel like my happy go lucky self again after two weeks of being off it. I also have lost 9lbs without trying and my blood pressure has powered back to normal. I am so angry I wasn't warned about what these hormones could do to my body, or that it took 4 years to figure out my craziness and it wasn't even a doctor that figured out, go figure. I almost lost everything in my life because these hormones changed me so much so that I lost friends and have to rebuild every single relationship with anyone I have in my life that means anything to me. It effects your entire life, I'm not saying this happens to everyone but it happened to me and it happens to about half of all women taking hormonal birth and not even the doctors are wising up to what is truly the problem. Sorry to keep posting but this angers me, all these women, all these problems and its not being identified. I'm 25 years old and I almost lost my life because I was trying to be smart in my family planning choices and ended up with a crazy non sexual monstrous version of myself instead. I wish this was talked about more amongst medical proffesionals as well as amongst women.
Jkdk - Wow, I have only had Mirena since 12/2/10 and have made the decision to have it removed. The insertion was the worst pain I can remember and I have 2 children. I had very little bleeding which has been the only good part. I have had severe cramping on my left side in my abdomen and back and into my hip as well. I am living on Motrin at this point. I am also very moody and can cry at the drop of a hat. I had a sonogram yesterday because my gyn was concerned that it was embedded because of all the pain I am experiencing. Now he is saying that because I have a retroverted uterus it could be why I am having so much pain. I can not wait to have it removed.
Pixiecatrn - After reading all that I have I am in near tears. I am recovering from a pulmonary embolism they believe was caused by the Mirena. This is the worst time in my life to be going through this as I am also going through a divorce. I am devastated to realize that for the past three and a half years my lack of interest in my son and family could have been due to the mirena.. to think my marriage fell apart because of this and I missed precious moments with my son due this and now I am having to deal with a PE on top of it all is just devastating. I am beyond myself... I am glad the mirena is out now due to the PE but it can never reconcile my shattered marriage...
Spresnell - i got the mirena a month ago and this past week ive had flutter or heart palps and feel i cant get full breath. i feel dizzy and woozy and anxiety-what led u to find out it was pe-im startng to thnk i need to go to dr...nervous
Bamabutterfly74 - OMG! I went to the doc two days ago b/c I was having SEVERE heart palpitations, and I could not figure out what in the world was causing them b/c nothing had changed in my life. They did and EKG and found an abnormality and said that it was common, but it should have shown up before now, and if it was new, they needed to send me to a cardiologist to find out the cause. After 2 days, I realized, "oh my goodness, I forgot! I had Mirena put in about 4 months ago!" So I got online just now, and I'm reading that other people are going through this too! That HAS to be the cause! I have not admitted this to anyone, but I haven't felt that "connection" everyone describes as being a first time mom, and that breaks my heart. I love my son, but from what I heard, I thought it would be stronger. Now, I am reading that many women have reported feeling this way. I am getting this thing out ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pixiecatrn - I went to the ER because I was having severe pain on the right side of my back that made it VERY difficult to take a deep breathe. The pain was radiating up my back to my shoulder and I had developed a cough 3 days prior. I had just gone to my primary care doctor for having had a sore throat for a week (which was sinusitis and unrelated) and I just attributed the cough to that, but then the pain started and I tried to sleep but was woken up and couldn't breathe. The ER didn't even think it was a PE but did the blood test (called a D-Dimer) to look for the PE and when it came back positive they did a CT scan and located the clot. I was in the hospital for 4 days and just had the mirena removed a few days after getting out. If you are having pain in the chest, back and/or shoulder, having sudden shortness of breath and/or a cough that is producing blood-tinged sputum you need to go to the ER immediately. I am now on a regimen of Coumadin for at least 6 months or more and I cannot take ANY type of birth control (besides condoms, diaphragm etc) for the rest of my life. I am only 24 years old. Mirena ruined my life.

It is out now simply because other women voiced their horrific stories on web pages like this one. My symptoms leading up to my PEs sound exactly like all of yours. So ladies, beware! And I'm not taking this lying down. Mirena will pay for this.

Cele385 - oh wow!!! I guess i never thought about it, but since i have had the mirena (3yrs), I have had bad cramping pain going up and down my right side of back into my shoulder and just overall bone pain. Arthritis runs in my mothers family so I attributed to that. And i also get headaches more frequently, before I would get a headache maybe every few months. Now every month for several days in a row I get excruciating headache. What made me recently start looking into complaints and side affects of the mirena is the fact that I have more and more been suffering from vaginal dryness. I have never ever had a poblem with libido, and although I still mentally want sex, physically my body does not, It has presented a problem in the bedroom and my husband thinking that he doesnt turn me on which is def not true. I am only 32 and refuse to live with a not up to par sex life. My husband is only 28!!! I also am much more moodier than my normal self and have thought that having children, being a wife, and working made me that way...I guess I need to do something about this Mirena.
