I have had mirena for almost five months now. I had it put in about a month and a half after the birth of my daughter. I am definately getting mine taken out. I thought I was going crazy untill I read all the other stories about side effects. I have hot flashes, terrible mood swings (too the point I begged my OB for counseling and depression meds on my check up for having it put in) , I have gained 20 lbs (after I lost nearly all of my pregnancy weight before I had it put in), I have pimples and I have terrible pain in one of my knees every morning ( although I am not possitive it has to do with mirena, but I never experienced it before I had it put in). Also, you know the pregnancy line you get on your stomache that fades with time?, mine is still there. It stopped going away when I had mirena put in. That line is caused by hormones, and the fact that mine is still there is proof enough for me that my hormones are messed up.
Although my experience is bad I do not think it is for everyone. Hormones do not effect all women in a negative way. I should have known better. I seriously considered getting the paraguard IUD instead, I really should have. I have had bad experiences with hormones in birth control since I was 15. I always stopped taking the pill because it made me emotional, depressive, and gain weight. Adding extra hormones to my body is not a good idea. If you have experienced promblems with the hormones in birthcontrol before, you may have the same problem with mirena. Then again, it may work great for you. Do your research so you don't think you're going nuts like I did, if you start experiencing side effects. The pamplet doesn't lead you to believe it will do anything like this.
If you are going to your OB about problems with Mirena, it may be a good idea to print off the information you find supporting your problems. I read another post where a girl did and I am going to do the same thing. My OB thought the mirena would not do this to me, I asked him before he put it in. So I am going armed with my research so they don't think I am nuts! Good luck!
