Hi, I'm 35, and I got the mirena inserted about
a year ago. Since then ive had two ovarian cysts. I've also had severe headaches, and recently developed severe upper right flank pain. My doc did panel and says my sed lvl is up, and myATL is up, which indicates liver issues and inflammation. Doctor doesn't think it's related to mirena, but I do. I want this thing out, but they can't find the strings, doc says they may have to knock me out to get this out if me! Have any of u experienced these issues on mirena? Did u get the device taken out? How did u feel afterward? How's your health/liver now? Thanks!

I can't say specifically about Mirena causing your liver issues, but I agree that it's def. a very good possibility. I personally have had LFT's drawn at about 3-month intervals since the birth of my daughter 11 mos ago. I had Cholestasis with both of my pregnancies, so I'm pretty closely monitored. The only reason I've had to continue to have my LFT's drawn is because my levels have yet to completely return to normal. I had the Mirena inserted around October. My last LFT came back with my ALT's back w/in normal range, but NOW my biliruben levels were raised. Now, I would be the first woman in known history to have ongoing and long-term problems resulting from ICP (Obstetric Cholestasis) and since stumbling upon COUNTLESS stories of problems related to Mirena, I'm absolutely convinced this is related. I didn't understand at the time why all of a sudden, one enzyme was elevated that wasn't previously.
I had my Mirena removed (will be 2 weeks tomorrow) and have been feeling incredibly "spaced out" for the last 4 days or so. My mom asked me if perhaps I'd forgotten to take one of my meds that I normally take, and I hadn't, but that sure is what it feels like. These are withdrawal symptoms for sure - I've had extremely bad withdrawal from meds before. Worst experience ever. I'm having some body aches as well as this terribly uncomfortable feeling - the BEST way I can describe it is it's if my head is moving about 5 seconds BEHIND the rest of my body. HTH
Tcik78 - Hi! I had ICP from week 11 while pregnant with my twin boys. They turned 5 last January and all 4 of liver enzymes are about 8 to 10 times what they should be STILL!! I have been tested for everything. I have had MRI, ultrasounds, CAT scans and liver biopsy. I had the Mirena place 6 weeks after delivery of my twin boys and just last Thursday had Mirena surgically removed under a general. I have had the Mirena for nearly 5 years and am hoping that is the cause of my liver still not being back to normal. So far I feel fantastic after having it removed. Heaps more energy, more alert, serverly less bloated. So now hoping liver reflects how good I feel. If you check out the Mirena product sheet on Bayer website, it does say something about how it should not be used in women with previous ICP. But all the docs push it! Good luck!
Jmed80 - I know that this was posted a year ago, but I do hope you see this and I hope all has turned around and went well for you. I had the Mirena implanted on 12/2/2021 and had a lot of complications following it, from pain, to bleeding, to a god awful strong odor - I have never before had odor issues. 6 week post implant I started to run a fever. In addition to fever, i experienced a rash, severe facial pressure, pressure on the eyes causing extremely red eyes and difficulty focusing, pain to the touch around the skull, severe headaches, and stiff neck, etc. On Jan 25th and Jan 31st 2022 I had series of blood work done, coming back with highly elevated liver levels, ALT, AST, protein, and calcium. In addition, red blood counts, hemoglobin, and sedimentation rates were all elevated. I was tested for everything imaginable, and all came back negative, including bacterial vaginosis. On 2/7/2022 I had Mirena removed, against medical advice as no one wanted to entertain that this may be the cause. Exactly one week to the day post removal, on 2/14/2022 I saw an infectious disease doctor as I am on day 34 with a fever. I was sent for additional blood work to determine if there was a change in my liver and blood counts. One week post removal and my liver enzymes are returning to normal, ALT still a little high but much better than it was and close to being back in normal range. Red blood counts are now within normal range as well. My energy level is returning greatly and I no longer have the vaginal odor. I still have the fever today, on day 34, but this could be that my body is still trying to return to normal. I'd love to hear your follow up and to see if anyone else is having these issues.
