I wish I would have read these posts before I had the device inserted!
My gynecologist assured me that Mirena was a safe and convenient way to address my issue of heavy, gushing periods. I read the brochures and pamphlets on the device and felt that the gynecologist was, probably, right.
I should mention that I am 38 years old, do not have children and have never been pregnant. I am also very petite (5'1" and 105 lbs) my "stats" may be part of the problem, I suspect.
The insertion was a difficult process for me. It was uncomfortable during the process and I almost threw up twice on the way home afterwards. I had to stay in bed for the remainder of the day as the cramping was vicious and the nauseau took some time to settle.
I have had the device for three weeks now and have had daily cramping pain and spotting/bleeding ever since. The cramping ranges from a mild irritation to completely debilitating at times. Sometimes I have to take pain killers and lie in a fetal position until it subsides. The pain seems to worsen throughout the day and is not related to menstural or pre-menstrual cramping. My lower abdomen has developed a permanent bloat and I have frequent headaches but I am not sure if the headaches are related.
A few days ago, my family doctor told me that I may be having a hard time tolerating the device because I am so tiny down there because I'm tiny period and because I've never had children. Naturally, this is never mentioned in any of the documentation that comes with the Mirena system. One would think that this would be a key fact to mention. So, I have found out (after the fact) that one size does not necessarily fit all. I think I will have to have the system removed if I continue to experience this pain for much longer. The whole experience has been pure misery for me. After having read some of the terrible things that others have gone through I find myself fortunate! I just hope that everyone will make a full recovery.
