hi im 21 my name is stephenie: i want to get mine out but i dont know if i should, every day i have pain were the mirena is it happens at least 3 times a day the pain is so bad i have to stop doin what im doin and after the pain slows i have hot flashes ive has this 4 at laest 3 years now and ive been trying to get it but my doc refuses it, and also ever since i got it my legs have been feeling like there going to give out and it sucks cause when that happens i get dizzy and get some more hot flashes so should i do it, i think yes but then no cause i dont want to have any more kids right now but then i dont like the pain

Valerie T - Hey, Stephenie - I'm not a medical provider but I've seen photos showing that uteruses come in many different sizes and shapes, and it's possible that a Mirena either doesn't fit or is mislocated (ie partially expelled). It sounds like you've had your Mirena for a while, and if it was going to work well for you, it should by now. There is an implant on the market, Implanon, that looks to be as effective as the Mirena (well over 99%), and it is also bleed-free. For women who have trouble tolerating the progestin hormone in the Mirena, there is a completely hormone-free IUD called the Paragard. It release copper ions that interfere with sperm motility. I've had mine for over 15 years and love it. (They're approved for 10, but research shows they are good for 14 and counting). The only down side is that you get your period, and in fact it may be heavier for the first six months during the adjustment phase. But given your description it's hard to tell if you're having trouble from hormones or fit -- or something else altogether. Have you checked in with a family planning specialist?
