Ok folks, I'm now 33, I was on Nuvaring for 6 months 4 years ago and it completely took my sex drive away. I told doctors for years that I never got my sex drive back, one was silly enough to tell me that I needed mental help. I had blood work done and my estrogen was only 29, anything below 36 is menopausal, also my free testosterone was @ 1, so basically this thing taught my body how to stop producing hormones. Now on HRT I'm feeling a bit better, but my sex drive still isn't completely back. Has anyone else been through this? Liz
Abridges27 - I just admitted to myself and my husband that I lost my sex drive. I've been on nuva ring for a year...right after I had my baby. I'm only 36 years old and my sex drive is completely shot! It wasn't until today that I figured it could be the nuva ring. I really hope that I get it back because this could potentially hurt my marriage. I'm going to the doctor in 3 days. Hopefully she can give me some decent news. April
Elizabeth87 - HI April, I am now on Testosterone and Estrogen supplements and I feel a lot better. I had my blood tested and my etradiol was 29 in the menopausal level and I had hot flashes and problems with my gums as well. I advise everyone to get off that thing, it's the only birth control where I lost weight but it teaches your body how to not make estrogen and testosterone. For 4 years I couldn't reach orgasm, that goodness I went to a doctor that could help, life it so much better, Liz

I am a male who is aware of my wife's decreasing sex drive. She just turned 26 and has used the nuvaring for a couple of years, but her sex life has only decreased over the last 9 months or so.
Did you have an active sex drive in the beginning of your nuvaring experience, and then experience a slow degression over a period of time?
This is affecting my self-worth as a partner in our relationship, and has created a sense of deceit that drives me nuts due to me questioning my wife's commitment to me in various ways.
She says she wants to be with me, but without her reaching out to me for intimacy...
.I feel unsteady in numerous ways.
Please voice some more of your experiences, i do not know what to expect or do.

Elizabeth87 - Hi Dojo, don't worry it's not you. Yes I enjoyed sex very much at the beginning but lost all interest to the point where it was a chore. Please don't feel unsteady. Birth control has caused her not to produce her natural hormones. I would recommend having her get a blood test to see her estrogen and testoserone levels, they are probably low. But believe her, I am still going through this, I couldn't reach orgasm for the life of me and the whole thing was pointless after nuvaring, best of luck, Liz

Elizabeth87 - Hi Rednova, that's what happened to me as well, and when I stopped the ring, te side effects never left. Yes no orgasm is totally a side effect and I also got a few yeast infections. I gave up after this one, Liz
Sourcecipher - I have been having the same problem. For awhile I thought it was just me, but started looking online and this seems to be really common for the nuvaring in particular. I've been on it for three years... I'm really hoping my own hormone production can come back from this. Does anyone know of any treatments for stimulating the natural production of hormones? It seems if something can deter them, something should be able to stimulate them as well. I really love my boyfriend, and during the day I think about doing things with him, and fantasizing, but the moment it comes down to it actually happening, it all goes away, and I feel like I'm being told to do chores. It's not always that way 100% either, 1 day out of a hundred I will have a day where I actually have a libido. It's nothing like it used to be but at least it's there.
I have been thinking about switching to an IUD. I have been researching the copper IUD, Paragaurd. They used to have all kinds of concerns about it, but from what I've read, they have all been disproven. It is just as effective as hormonal birth control, has no hormones what-so-ever, is good for 12 years, and can be taken out at any time. It is a small piece of copper that is inserted into the uterus. It has a small floss like string that hangs out of the cervix. The only side effect is possible heavier cramps, but everything I have read for people's experiences says that goes away with time and it's the best thing they have ever done for themselves.
I'm still not sure how it works, but the copper somehow prevents the egg from attaching to the uterus walls by making it an inhospitable environment for the egg, it also prevents the sperm from fertilizing the egg in the uterus. You still ovulate and have a natural period, you'r body just acts as if the eggs are infertal, but you are fine as soon as the IUD is removed. It does not disrupt your natural cycle or your natural hormone production.
I thought that might help others who are trying to find another solution.
Elizabeth87 - HI Sourcecipher, yes I am on hormone replacement, it's not quite like it used to be but it's a lot better. You need to go to your doctor and get a blood test. My estradiol was only 29 and free testoserone was 1.3. So yes I am benefiting from the hormone replacement but I still don't feel 100%, and I would avoid hormonal BC at all costs! good luck, Liz
Damir - Girls, thanks a lot for your cooments. I've been on The Nuvaring for 3 years now and almost completelly lost my sex drive. Of Course this has been a major problem In my marriage. I also developed swelling of hands, feet and legs, and I Gained weight. I never had any kind of side effect with other pills. After reading your stories I decided to take it off. Thanks!
Romeoz_wife - I have been on paraguard IUD and have loved it! It is the best choice with no hormones. The only side effects I have ever had, the three times I have had it has been spotting, heavier flow and cramping. None of these symptoms have been of great concern and are easy to deal with, with midol a pantyliner and extra tampons or pads in your purse. It has never given me enough reason to change methods. I have only removed it to get pregnant and then put right back in. Hormones can really screw you up in many different ways as it did with me on the depo and the pill. I wouldn't change my choice for anything. Total time I have had an IUD in has been 11 years off and on with 4 wonderful babies in between.
Willsing4bread - Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I'm am almost crying now as I'm reading all of these posts. They explain so much and let me know that I'm not alone. I know that I've really hurt my husband by not seeming interested in sex, but honestly I've had absolutely no drive or desire. I mean, I do in my head and I want to be intimate with him, but my body just says no. And it hasn't always been this way. I was afraid it was the Nuvaring, and it's so eye-opening to hear all of your stories. I'm sorry we've had to go through this, but forums like this will hopefully help us all find a healthier and happier life.
