Omeprazole Dizziness, H Pylori Bacteria, Achilles Tendon, Vitamin D Deficiency, Acid Reflux

I have been taking omeprazole daily for about 10 months now due to complications caused from h-pylori bacteria, etc. Prior to being diagnosed with these gastric issues, all I took daily was an allergy med and vitamins. My blood pressure was always relatively normal. I have been having spells off and on ever since I started taking the omeprazole. I have been terrified a few times that I was either having a heart attack or a stroke. I will also get the tightness and "lump in my throat" feeling from time to time, which my GI attributed to acid reflux, as in it is trying to even though nothing is there (?). ... more »

The EMS was recently called on me at work. I was convinced is was a heart attack, and needless to say, I ended up going into a full blown panic attack (making it even worse). My blood pressure has been high ever since, and now they have put me on bp meds. My most recent blood test revealed I am majorly vitamin D deficient. I registered only 0.4 when it should be minimally 30.0 and they prefer it to be 50 to 60. I am not on a mega dose of Vitamin D I take weekly.

Finally...I am having a real problem with my left ankle and achilles tendon. Is it possible all of these things, i.e. HBP, vitamin D deficiency, ankle pain, dizziness, chest pressure, etc....could be related to the omeprazole? I am glad I found this site. It seems others are experiencing some similar things. There just has to be something to it.

Ruralex - I had h-pylori bacteria as well and took the necessary antibiotic cocktail. My gastro prescribed omeprazole too, but I researched and decided not to take it. When I went back for my recheck I told him I wasn't taking it and he said "Is it because of the osteoporosis connection?" I hadn't even found that side effect! I said yes and because of all the other complications too :-) He said just take a pepcid when you need it. Try to get yourself off that stuff. Unfortunately, you may experience rebound acid reflux and it may take a while. I wish you well.

Disgruntled46 - I have been taking Rabeprazole for the last year or so for Gastritis and reflux, with no side effects at all! After Christmas my Doctor's Surgery wrote to me saying these were too much of an expense to them and were putting all their patients onto a cheaper version - Omeprazole. I finished the tablets I had left and then began on the new ones. For the last 9 weeks or so my hair, on a daily basis, has been falling out at an alarming rate. I hadn't related the two until my hairdresser asked me if i'd changed any medication, so last week I visited the Doctor who said this was a rare side effect and would put me on a slightly more expensive version - Lansoprazole (28 days worth). Low and behold, when I looked them up on internet, exactly the same side effects! I have been told to give them at least 10 days before I will see any change. Am on my fourth day now, but hair still falling out at same rate. I would say that in the 9 weeks I have lost almost a third of my hair and can't risk it for much longer before I am bald, on anti-depressents and on sick leave from work!! Will try and give it at least 2 weeks, but then will ask to be put back on Rabeprazole. I bet he wouldn't have given them to his wife!! Can't believe for a few extra pounds, they would do this to their patients!!

Gabrip01 - I wanted to let everyone know that I have been off of the omeprazole completely for almost a month now (see my original posting of symptoms 4/26/10), and I am a new person! Although I have been afraid to completely stop the blood pressure meds, I am happy to report I have had no weird symptoms and the highest my bp has been since I stopped taking omeprazole is 134/86...and that was two weeks ago. I keep tums with me in case I start feeling heartburn or acid reflux coming on and am also drinking a probiotic yogurt smoothie and a cup of Yogi ginger tea almost daily...and I am FINE! My vitamin D is getting back up where it should be, I have my energy back, and I have no pains in my ankle and achilles tendon anymore. I went on a trip to Chicago last week and walked all over the place without any problems at all. If you can get by without it, I highly recommend getting off of the omeprazole. It does more harm than good.
