I recently stopped taking Seroquel 25mg gradually. I can not go to sleep. I've tried Tylenol PM, Melatonin. Sleep is extremely limited. 2- 3 hrs a night. I'm 58 yrs old with no period for a year til recently, suddenly one night of hot flashes next day I have a cycle that lasts 5 days. Is the insomnia menopause related or Seroquel????Also have ringing in one ear, checked by ENT. Ringing is a symptom of Menopause and also hearing loss. Help
Vgheat - I've been through menopause and am going through seroquel withdrawal with my son. While my sleep quality suffered - thanks in part to hot flashes and night sweats - it was no where near as bad as the insomnia caused by seroquel withdrawal. Extreme insomnia is probably the most common symptom for those withdrawing from seroquel. Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) is also commonly associated with seroquel and/or seroquel withdrawal. From what I have read, it can take months to feel "normal" and healthy after quitting seroquel. My son experienced nocturnal seizures, extreme somnolence, high blood pressure, racing heart, daily nosebleeds, and rapid weight gain while taking seroquel. It is a powerful and dangerous drug. Getting off it is going to be a difficult process, but staying on it is not an option. He is only 14 years old. I am so angry with his doctor for prescribing it for him and even angrier with myself for not learning more about it before giving it to him. Slpnght - seroquel is toxic drug for insomnia. it works by stopping the normal functioning of brain which is then slowly damaged by seroquel use. SEROQUEL SHOULD ONLY USED FOR SCHIZOPHRENIA AND BIPOLAR DISORDER RELATED INSOMNIA. (not for depression, ptsd, autism, aggression, personality problems, primary insomnia).
REAPEAT: do not use seroquel for insomnia, use sleeping pills.
seroquel withdrawal and use may cause blood circulation problems (not necessary blood pressure problems - thinning of vessels instead). if your tinnitus goes away by taking a hot shower or taking a walk then you may need something to improve blood vessel dilation/circulation etc. (don't know any meds, acetycholine antagonist may help?).
For insomnia use:
glycine 3-5g, l-arginine (also good for blood circulation), melatonin, magnesium, trytophan, taurine 2g, sleeping pills, honey + tea, relaxation and deep breathing exercises, ramelteon (instead of melatonin), hot shower before bedtime may help with blood circulation problems and may help with sleep, find quiet and cool place to sleep
Future: use orexin angtagonist (almorexant) when it is available. Also other ways to reduce orexin activity (honey) before bedtime (not hungry) are useful
Your neurotransmitter levels can also be low: eat tomatos to increase histamine (during day), take berberine supplements to increase neurotransmitter levels (mostly for night), eat and drink very little during days and eat lots of water and eat on evenings (lower orexin and lower histamine levels)
Find ways to reduce histamine levels by night and increase histamine levels during day, find ways to reduce orexin activities during days
Find neurologist who is specialized for sleep, prolonged seroquel use can cause very bad insomnia problems which mean you cannot stop using seroquel and in the end it will destroy you.
