Simvastatin & Weight Gain
Posted over a year ago
I have gained 40 lbs since I've been on Simvastatin. I've had a heart attack 3 years ago and have been on it since. I have always been thin, I'm 66 years old. I'm getting depressed over my weight gain. The doctor said it's not the simvastatin, it's what I'm eating. Bull.....
Bobby - I have heard the complaint before from others saying they gained weight on statins.
Statins induce several metabolic deficiencies from the liver's mevalonate pathway. 1)The reduction of CoQ10 could potentially slow down metabolism by reducing the ATP needed for cell energy. 2) Since Testosterone is made from LDL cholesterol, a possible deficiency in steroid hormone levels could contribute to weight gain. 3) Statins interfere with selenoprotiens which are required for thyroid hormone metabolism.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize the potential for weight gain on statins. Just a basic understanding of human physiology and the liver's mevalonate pathway is all thats needed to recognize the situation.
