I already posted about my son's behavioral changes while on the drug from the time he was 4-7. He is now 9 years old and has been back to "normal now for 18 months. BUT- we recently had his immune system checked though a blood test and he does not have sufficient immunity for ANY viruses. My 6 year old could fight 8 out of the 14, but my son who was on Singulair for almost 4 years has a severely depleted immune system. And from what I have read, could clearly be attributed to the drug. BUYER BEWARE~!

Concernedcitizen - Singulair suppresses the immune system by blocking the leukotriene response. Leukotrienes, made in immune cells from arachidonic acid, create a signally mechanism called the lipoxygenase pathway, which is active in leukocytes, including mast cells, eosinophils, neutrophils, monocytes and basophils. In other words, the leukotriene response is like a telegraph system that sends signals to other immune cells to tell them where to go in the body and what to do. Singulair is actively blocking signals to these other immune cells and by doing that the symptoms that are so miserable are stopped. That, however, comes at a big price to the overall long term immune system. I posted an Italian research study that discussed the fact that during their experiment they observed that t-cells (cells that help and signal other immune cells) died. That indicated to me that without these t-cells that B-lymphocytes would NOT do their job to create the type of immune response such as antibodies (as an example) that would be necessary to fight infection especially viruses. We have had others on this board post that their children showed inadequate immune systems after using Singulair for a period of time. This drug should be thoroughly investigated by an independent source of objective researchers not tossed back to Merck to review their clinical data. And all liars should be criminally prosecuted! These are the lives of children for God's sake.
