I have been on Singulair longer than I can recall... at least 10 years, maybe longer. My 7 year old son has been on it since he was probably 12 months old. Neither one of us have had any problem reported here. No depression, no sleeplessness (until I weaned him from naps, he slept up to 13 hours a day), no leg cramps, nothing. We are two of the happiest, most well adjusted people you could know. And, best of all, we haven't had any asthma attacks. Bottom line, different drugs react differently in different people. Don't let the post here stop you from trying a medication that for some could mean the difference between life and death depending on how asthmatic they are. As with any drug recommended by your doctor, try it. If you experience adverse reactions, stop it ASAP. It's that simple.
Zsmom - I am very glad to know that your son and you are not suffering side effects from Singulair and that it is successfully controlling your asthma. You are both VERY VERY lucky. If you are aware of the possible side effects listed on Singulair's label, know how to identify an adverse reaction, and are aware of the additional serious suspected side effects reported to the FDA that have necessitated their Safety Review of Singulair, then you have made an educated decision to continue using it.
As the parent of a child who had a serious adverse reaction to Singulair and suffered for many years, I know that it is NOT always "that simple" to identify a child's behavioral, emotional, and/or physical symptoms as an adverse reaction to Singulair. Many children have suffered unnecessarily because even their doctors were unable to do this.
Singulair can be VERY dangerous for some people. Because it has never been clinically proven the most effective treatment for asthma or allergies and it is not effective for everyone who uses it (this has been clinically proven), it is simply not worth subjecting a child to its risks without first trying other medications.
I am not criticizing your personal choice to use Singulair or give it to your child. It is obvious that you both began using it before the current safety issues were made public. However, I do not agree with your conclusion that Singulair is a lifesaving drug.
Massmomof3 - I'm happy you and your son have no side effects, and that Singulair brings relief. However, I know that even the manufacturer does not claim that this medication saves lives, so please do not present it that way. It is not even a first line drug. It does help some people have fewer symptoms, and by some I mean only about 40% of people who participated in clinical trials. Regardless of your experience, this drug should be used with caution, because its potential harm does outweigh its potential benefit. Anyone taking the risk should do it with all the knowledge possible.
Matthewct1 - Singulair is not a life saving drug....period. It has only been proven to have modest efficacy as compared to inhaled corticosteriods which remain as the only proven first line defense in regards to asthma. Others on here have experienced horrible side effects from Singulair and are here to issue a clear warning about the potential side effects of this drug. You are lucky.

B2bmommy - I wish I had never used this drug on my son. He just had allergies and very mild asthma 5 years ago. Now he has ADHD, and possibly tourette's. Is it because of the singulair? I will never know, but the side effects posted here are real and are all too much alike to deny.
Flindy - happy to read your experances with this drug have been positive,wondering what would lead you to this thread if you have had no side effects,this drug for some children is life changing in a bad bad way,taking them done a path of horror,the truth shall come out some day,
Kerrymom - Remember that the pharmacutical companies pay people to find message boards like this and "pump" their products. Ask yourself this - if someone was on singular for that long and happy with it - part of their daily life - why would they even google "singular side effects" to find this place?
Lisa4 - PLEASE keep an eye on your child as he gets older. My son didn't have any side effects that I linked to singulair till he was on it for years. And I mean years! He started it when he was almost 3 and I took him off at 12. The side effects came on sooo slowly that I never made the connection.(neither did his doctors) Headaches went from once in a while to almost every single day over a 5 year period. Doctors blamed it on sinuses, stuffy schools, etc. Stomache problems did the same. Only when I was researching singulair due to a news report and started reading these posts did I start to suspect that singulair was the problem. I wouldn't have believed singulair was the cause if I hadn't seen such a dramatic change when I took him off of it. I wish I had had this info years ago. It would have saved my son and I alot of heartache.
Joshnabbey - I came to the internet looking to see what the side effects of singulair were because the doctor put my 3 year old on it for severe allergies. While I read what most of you were posting, I decided to see for myself how things would go. Not everyone reacts to medicine the same way. I've kept a close eye on my daughter and like the woman who posted at the beginning of the thread, my daughter has done wonderfully on this drug. She turned from a cranky, moody, tired,black bags under her eyes, drippy nose little girl, into a normal, smiley, happy, outgoing healthy little girl. I understand that some of you have experienced horrible side effects from this drug and for that I am truly sorry. I cannot imaging having some of the things happening to my children that have happened to yours. But I am also here to say that it doesn't happen to everyone and my daughter is proof of that. I will continue to watch her closely for signs of issues that may arise, but for now she's happy and healthy and I'm thankful for that.
Margie65 - Some people may not react to singulair with depression or anxiety, but beware because long term use can also cause liver damage. That comes on silently.
I used to be on it and I used to get depressed and not know why. I would cry and not know why. I stopped taking it and I was back to normal again. Never again will I take that drug more so since I've seen the side effects.
Advair for asthma is a killer drug. I almost died while I was taking it. I had frequent asthma attacks and respitatory infections. After that last fatal attack I researched it and found out the truth. Also web md had a black box warning on it that says can cause asthma related death. I took the alternative route and never looked back. Thank God I am doing so much better now, Research everythng. Pharmaceutical companies do not care about you they only care about the billions they take in from bad drugs. It's the same thing with the long list of vaccines for children. Look up the ingredients you will be surprised what's in them. Look up the scientific name you do not understand and you will be shocked that they are putting this stuff into your child's body. That's why there is such a high rate of kid with ADD and other learning disorders, That's not even speaking of the babies that have died from vaccines. Take charge if your health and your family.
