I urge anyone with a child on this med to STOP as soon as possible. My teenager has been on this in the 5mg dose for a year and was moody and not the same...didn't connect the singular until he was upped to 10mg a few months ago and his moodiness escalated, rage, not sleeping, weight gain, miserable, WORST OF ALL he had an unexplained seizure and we are almost positive Singulair is the cause. Research this, it was hard for me to find, but this drug is NOT GOOD. All docs told me it was fine and to continue it. Report your experience to the FDA, they have an online form. It is critical to get the word out so no others suffer.

Tn7 - My son was on Singulair from about 4 to 7. Once I heard a loud scream in the middle of the night. So loud my daughter woke up crying because it scared her. I went to check on them both...my sons eyes were open but he was not really responding. I just went back to bed thinking he was just dreaming. Fast forward a few months. Same scream happened again. Woke my wife. She went to check on him and he was in full seizure mode. This time, eyes rolled back in his head, foaming at the mouth. Scariest moment of my life. Wife was freaking out. I somewhat calmed the situation but after a short period of time you start to fear what to do if he does not snap out of any. Anyway, we started to put things together. He used to wake up in the morning sometimes feeling sick. He might throw up and then want to sleep. After sleeping for a few hours he was fine. We thought he had migrains maybe, but after this it explained a lot. When we asked how often it happened, he said his body would just tighten up and he said he thinks it happened 6 or 7 times. We had the EKG, MRI and one other sleep test and they all came back negative. We immediately took him off the medicine and the neurologist did put him on a seizure medication for two years. After 1 year, we have not had any issues.
We have one more year to go and then bleed him off the meds. Bad news is we will never know if it was the Singulair. He uses an inhauler every once and a while but I will not put him back on Singulair unless his life really depended on it. Having three kids in day care, we were so used to them getting sick and the pediatrician prescribing something to get them healthy. Never really read up on the side effects. After this episode and researching Singulair I cannot believe I put my son on this. If you look at the list of side effects on their site, I wouldn't even want take the medicine myself. When I asked the pediatrician about the side effects, they just brushed it off. I was very mad at their "non-response". The neurologist did explain that in clinical trials everyone could be healthy and if any issue comes up they have to list it as a side effect. That I can understand, but with such a long list there's got to be something going on...
Gam91 - This story just made my heart ache. I have often wondered if any seizures had occurred before this also. We discovered it by accident and it was in the middle of the night too. Positively the most scariest moment of my life also. Same type with the mouth and eyes thing. Went to doctor had same MRI, EEG, Cat scan all tests negative. They did not put him on meds because we don't know if this was only time or not. I do know that he was not feeling well in the mornings either, headaches all the time. When we were in pedi office for follow up he searched side effects for us and said seizures are listed only as a rare side effect, most likely had nothing to do with my sons seizure. This put up a red flag for me and I went home and searched it myself and was stunned at the side effects. I cried over it because I knew in my heart it was because of this med and he had all the other signs as well. The neuro & pedi both said no connection and to put him back on it if it gave him relief...I said never. I think they are not making the seizure connection at this time..not sure why or if people even know this is in fact a side effect. I wish the word could be spread to help others as this is just all so confusing and frightening. called my sons allergist also and he said to keep giving it to him or i could cut the dose in half, I said I am taking him off of it but wanted to go on record as having all the side effects listed and more. I did report this on the FDA website and I encourage you to do so too. I think I got the link thru parentsforsafety.org The word needs to get out. I am telling absolutely everyone I know about this who has allergies or asthma ...I wish I could do more.
Gam91 - Tn7..how is your child now? Have all side effects subsided? Have you found out anything new? We are still in shock over this whole incident and will forever be changed with worry and I just want my child back to normal. Have you seen any change. Our child is returning to his normal loving fun self...I still feel awful he had to go thru this all.

Gam91 - Ksallen1 - thank you, he is getting better everyday! the mood swings have lessened and lessened the more time passes. I think he is getting fully detoxed now and is happy again and excelling in school as he used to do! I was worried about long term damage but it seems to be going well now. his motivation, laughing, fun, happy self is back! his allergies are awful but we are doing what we can to cope with it naturally.
Kikoi - @Gam91 How is ur son doing :)? I'm better ! The burning in my thighs is still there but not as bad :)
