Hi everyone, I am incredibly worried about a small pea sized lump I have discovered underneath my adam's apple.
It is mobile, it does not hurt when I swallow, I do not have a hoarse voice.
A month ago, I went to the doctors about another lump at the left side of my neck, she said it was a lymph node swollen.
I am really worried, I don't know what this lump is... could it be something really serious?
I am 20 years of age and I am a casual smoker.
Laurelis - I would check with an endocrinologist and see if it's a thyroid nodule. Usually benign, but could be affecting your thyroid hormone levels. they should be able to tell with a blood sample and ultrasound, if not just with having you come in. Benign thyroid nodules can be fairly common in 20-something men (and women). I had a nodule in my neck that i could see and feel with my hand, but it did not affect my breathing or swallowing, so I actually didn't notice it til the doctor pointed it out. If you don't want/can't go to an endocrinologist, at least have your regular doc do a thyroid blood test and/or ultrasound.
Pbrickner - I found the EXACT same thing in my 30s... pea-sized mobile lump in same area. Doctor said to keep an eye on it which i did for 4 years then i finally INSISTED on an ultra-sound. Come to find out, I had 7 or 8 nodules on my thyroid gland (thyroiditis), and the lump ended up being a tiny malignent cancer! It had probably been there since my 20s but GOOD NEWS... most thyroid cancers can just sit there for years. I had a thyroidectomy a decade ago with no other problems, and the focus on my thyroid meds has corrected a lot of other health problems which my bad thyroid had been causing (...which had previously been blamed on "aging!") My mother also had a thyroidectomy because of cancer in her 40s and is doing fine at age 73. Be sure to get an ultra-sound and biopsy of that lump... you wouldn't want the possibility of having it spread into other areas.
Pbrickner - P.S. the cancer didn't show up as a result of my regular doctor's thyroid blood test. He finally ordered up the ultrasound at my insistence and when the results were returned sent me to an oncologist. The oncologist ordered the biopsy, and the rest was taken care of by an endocrinologist whom I see yearly to this day.
The lump caused no problems nor pain whatsoever, but one day when I was brushing my hair and actually noticed the lump in the mirror (altho it still felt no larger than a pea), that's when i got proactive about it.
