I have been on Topamax for 4 months and so far the migraines I have suffered for 40 years are gone. Great Some side effects like can't stand carbonated drinks. Reaction time is a little slower. I stress out a little more then I used to. I get really tired at the end of the day. I used to be a night owl but now love my sleep. Question to you all. Any one had problems with their teeth? Such as pain, fillings falling out? Let me know.
Absisback - I have been on Lamictal for 4 years and after the first year I suddenly started having all kinds of teeth and gum problems for no discernible reason. But since Lamictal (and Topamax as well) has the possible side effect of "sores or blisters on the inside of the mouth" I wondered if it could be related. I did a Google search and am coming up with no experts yet, but lots and lots of posts like yours connecting anticonvulsant meds, particularly Lamictal, Topamax, Neurontin, and Depakote. Dilantin is well known for causing gum disease and breaking down tooth enamel, loosening of teeth, and even breaking down of jawbone tissue. I don't think the experts have connected the dots yet, but you are definitely not alone. Try a Google search for "Topamax" and "teeth" and see what you find.
My dentist, btw, knew I was on Lamictal and knew nothing about it causing these problems. But is sure explained why all of the sudden my dental record went from hero to zero.
Devans - Your issue with your teeth is exactly what I was looking for. I have been on Topamax for 8 months and my tounge always feels fuzzy and numb and everything tastes bad. But recently no matter how often I brush my teeth and tounge, my teeth hurt and by gums hurt. I wasnt sure if it was the Topamax or not. Pennyp - Sorry to see that others have experienced the same sort of side effects that I have from Topamax...but glad too...so I know I am not just being a whiner...I was rx'd the Topamax for my fibromyalgia. I took 25mg with diiner for 1 week, side effects were troublesome (moodiness, anxiety, my tongue felt thick and burned like I'd eaten a whole fresh pineapple) but subsided after about 5 days. Then I moved my dose to 50mg as direscted, the first dose at that level made me feel like I was clenching my jaw, when in fact I wasn't...and I had general mouth pain...then...by day 3 I was in total pain with several teeth (upper and lower) all on the right side so sensitive to hot,cold and sweet that I could barely talk for the pain...I called the doctor to see if this could be a side effect (I could find little to support this online) or if I should see the dentist...she told me to STOP the Topamax...that was on day 5 of the 50mg doseage...I have been without for 2 days now, the sensitivity is getting better, but it is still troublesome...best of luck to you. I think they might do well to add mouth pain and tooth sensitivity to the list of possible side effects!!!
Blessedbearlady - I have lost most of my teeth because of side effects from Topamax. I now wear dentures that give me daily headaches. I don't know what to do now. I hope to get implants soon and hope it will help stop some of the pain.

sure I wont be using it again. My vision has also gotten worse and
for me thats where I draw the line. I have no doubt the topamax is
to blame for the problems because its the only medicine that I use.
Rumariecole - I have been on Topamax for 2 1/2 months now in December 2009, I went up to my 100mg on day 3 my mouth, eyes, tongue, lips started burning and teeth started hurting and had horrible taste in my mouth. Thought it was a tooth infection because I just had a crown put in a month ago but it was not. So I backed down to 75 mg. for a while. Thought it was a sinus infection but it was not. Jan 11 went back up to 100mg 3 days later guess whats back? Should I continue and hope it goes away like the other side affects or give up????
Tania456 - The reason the anticonvulsants cause tooth decay is because of the side effect "dry mouth", without the constant production saliva especailly in our sleep our enamel breaks down and our teeth and gums become vunerable to decay and disease. I've been on anticonvulsants (sp) and anti-depressants for years I also work in the bipharm industry and have an obsession with oral hygiene. I too noticed the cold sores and tooth decay after taking the medication and connected the dots myself.
Andyukchat - Thats Tania very helpful. Im sitting here with a bad toothache, and wondering whether it really is anything to do with topirimate.
Ive been taking 200 mg for seizures for 15 years, and all my gums are red and swollen, Ive lost 3 teeth, I also get blurred vision. I also take another drug, keppra, its hard to tell.
Ive asked and no one thinks there is a problem apart from my teeth, usual story.

have had horrible dental problems and bills (extreme pain)
kidney stone surgery (still have one they left)
breathing problems
was anorexic (5'6" 114lb now im back to 135)
very thin hair that was thick before topamax
i would love to be reimbursed for all my bills. but i doubt that i could ever be so lucky. i still have dental problems and no insurance. please if anyone has any advice let me know. thanks!
Mollyann45 - Wow though I was the only one....been on generic topamax for about 3 weeks as soon as I went from 75mg to 100mg got a wicked sinus infection and my teeth and gums are killing me!! Been on antibiotic for two days bet it does nothing....we shall see i'm going back down to 75mg seemed to work perfect!
Lauram88 - I took Topamax for about two months. I was taking 200mg/day. In that time period, I got a mouth/throat full of canker sores. Folliculitis (skin sores) as well. I had horrible joint pain in my ankles and wrists. I was very weak. I felt a lot like when I had mono as a teenager (I'm 38 now). Shortness of breath and heart palpitations were horrible. Oh and when I had the mouth sores, my gums would bleed and were very swollen. I weaned myself off of it completely after my Thryoid went crazy. It was over active (hyperthyroid). This also makes you lose weight. I wonder what other people's thyroid levels are when they are taking topamax?? My thyroid is "fixing itself" now, so they know I don't have a thyroid disease. They said its a temporary problem--unknown reason. I haven't discussed the possibility of Topamax being part of the problem. Anyway, since I have been off Topamax, I feel so much better. No aches, mouth sores, or shortness of breath. I'm pretty much back to normal. Just waiting for my thyroid to heal up. Has anyone else had the canker sores (I mean a ton!) or the thyroid problems while on this drug?

Editgrl - sorry to hear of everyone's pain and trauma, and yet it is validating for me because shortly after i started on 50 mg of topamax, it's felt like the inside of mouth and lips have been swollen and by now on 100 mg, my lips feel like they're constantly on fire.... my dental issues are not yet any worse, although now i wonder if those i've had have been due at least in part to long-term use of lamictal, based on some of the comments here; i always thought they were caused by an accident long ago..... perhaps most disappointing is that topamax does not fully prevent the migraines although i've stuck with it because it may help some. overall, it's not been a positive experience and at this point, i don't know what to do, and as evidenced here, docs often would rather blindly prescribe rather than listen and respond to patient experience..... very discouraging.
