I started taking Topamax (actually generic topiramate -25 mg at night) on March 30th, a Tuesday for migraine prevention.. I took 9 doses, and all of a sudden, mid-day, my normal nearsightedness corrected by glasses/contacts became worse. By the time my husband came home from work, I was legally blind. I suffered a rare, serious side effect from the medication - it gave me acute angle closure glaucoma. My pressures in my eye by the next morning were 49 and 50. The eye doctor was able to get the pressure down with drops, and the topiramate is out of my system, but I have some eye damage that I am still dealing with a month later. Because I am 36, they think I am young enough that my left iris/pupil can recover normal function, but it has been dilated since the pressure came down. Please be aware of this side effect, and if you experience any sudden nearsightedness, go see an ophthalmologist immediately and make them aware that you have taken this medication.
