High Triglycerides
Posted over a year ago
I have been taking WelChol for a year now. Six months ago my Triglycerides jumped to 305. I was told reduce the amount of red meats, no more colas and no Scotch. I did that and my triglycerides are 416. Is it possible that the WelChol is contributing to this? Has anyone else experienced the problem?
Clinicphn - My triglycerides were 99. After 30 days of Welchol my triglycerides are now 228. I don't eat anything fried, and no red meat. The only thing that changed during this time was adding Welchol for a GI problem. My TSH almost doubled as well.
Patient007 - This is very strange behaviour for the drug Welchol because it is design to lower triglyceride's not increase their levels. Triglyceride is an ester that formed by the dehydration synthesis reaction of 3 fatty acids with a molecule of glycerol. So every time you. The enzyme pancreatic lipase acts at the ester bond, hydrolysing the bond and "releasing" the fatty acid. Fatty acids are an important source of energy and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) for many cellular organisms. Triglycerides yield more than twice as much energy for the same mass as do carbohydrates or proteins. SO UNLESS YOU HAVE TRAINED your body through diet and life style to use the amount of energy your body needs from other sources then just triglyceride, like protein, Your body will find a way to increase to production of triglyceride because Welchol is reducing the production and your rate of spending the energy is very high, So lower the intensity of all your activity and increase the duration of your activity may help reduce the triglyceride by taking Welchol instead of increasing them by taking Welchol. So bottom like is slow down your life a notch and see if it makes a difference. Off course eating protein reach food and regular exercise will help that is well pace may prove to be helpful. Let me know... Raj
Medications7 - False. Welchol CAN increase triglyceride levels but is prescribed to reduce LDL-C (bad cholesterol) and A1C. (blood sugar)
If you have trigs over 500 your doc will not write it for you. 200-300 he can write it and monitor trigs. Anything below is safe.
If you have high triglycerides talk to your doctor about Omega 3 supplements or prescription drugs such as Lovaza.
Welchol is NOT a statin, it is a bile acid sequestrant (which is a non systemic agent; does not pass through liver or kidneys or any major organs: it works in your GI tract) that helps lower LDL as mono therapy or when added to a low dose startin to reduce some of the harmful side effects of higher dose statins.
